The purpose of this paper was to determine long-range and spatial variability of the start and end dates of a period of intense vegetation in Poland in 1966–2015. The article is based on average monthly air temperature values acquired for 20 Polish stations for 1966–2015, made available by the Institute of Meteorology and Water Management – the National Research Institute. Based on the obtained data, the dates of the beginning and end of the intense vegetation period were determined. In this study, the intense vegetation period was defined as one with an average daily air temperature ≥10°C. The mathematical formulas proposed by Gumiński (1948) were used to determine the dates of the beginning and end of the period. A period of intense vegetation in Poland in the years 1966–2015 has extended. The dates of the beginning of the period of intense vegetation changed in the latitudinal system from the south to the north while the intensity of changes in the date of the beginning in the studied area was characterized by longitudinal distribution – the most prominent in the west of Poland. The end of the intense vegetation period occurs earliest in the north-east of Poland, and latest in the west and the south. The end date changes were less significant than the start date changes. The length of the intense vegetation period ranges from the north-east to the south-west of Poland, and the most dramatic changes occurred in the west and the south-east of Poland.

The paper presents the characteristics of the life cycle of the “Yvette” cyclone and the associated rainfall in Europe. The low originated on May 13th over the Gulf of Genoa. The system moved along Vb route over the Hungarian lowlands, then changed its path to the west. The system was visible on the maps for approx 4.5 days. Heavy rain affected areas of Serbia situated south-west of Belgrade. On May 14th the daily totals reached 112 mm in Belgrade and 130 mm in Loznica. In Bosnia and Herzegovina the rainfall was much lower than in Serbia. In Croatia the precipitation maxima were smaller than in Serbia and BiH. In Poland the highest rainfall occurred between 15 and 17 of May. Record amount of pre-cipitation was measured on May 15th in Zakopane (114 mm). If Yvette trajectory had not been shifted from the Vb pathway toward the west the precipitation and flood risk in Poland would have been higher.

The article presents the course of the average annual trajectory of van Bebber’s Vb cyclones. The most rainfall-efficient section of the trajectory, i.e. the occurrence region of cyclones which produce the highest precipitation in Poland, was delimited. A map of average daily precipitation totals associated with Vb lows was constructed as well as a map indicating the maximum rainfall i.e. the highest sum of daily precipitation at the weather station in the period 1958‒2008 associated with the Vb cyclones situated close to the most rainfall-efficient segment of the trajectory. Vb route begins at the Balearic Sea and ends over southern Finland. The highest rainfall in Poland is associated with lows situated in the vicinity of the middle section of the trajectory – over eastern Hungary, western Romania or southern Slovakia. The highest average amount of rainfall can be observed in south-eastern Poland, particularly in the Żywiec dale, in the Tatras, and over the Lublin Upland. Maximum daily rainfall associated with Vb cyclones occurred on Śnieżka peak and reached 129.2 mm.

Introduction. Poland is a member of the WHO European Region where a complete eradication of measles and rubella is planned to be finished by 2015. Poland accounted for 99% of all reported rubella cases in 27 EU/EEA countries in 2013. It is a good time to evaluate whether the established Polish vaccination strategy was sufficient to reach the goal of rubella elimination in the near future. Aim. The aim of this study was to analyze the epidemiology of rubella in Poland when the disease outbreak took place in 2013, to determine the reasons of that situation and to find the solution for future rubella elimination strategies. Material and methods. To analyze the epidemiology of rubella in Poland during the disease outbreak in 2013 the authors used rubella surveillance data collected by the Provincial and National Notifiable Disease Reporting System in 2004-2013. The information at the provincial level derived from one of the 16 provinces (Malopolska). The data on MMR vaccination coverage in 2003-2012 derived from the National Surveillance System. The percentages of rubella cases and vaccine coverage between Poland with Malopolska province were compared. Results. The outbreak started in late 2012 and continued through 2013, when 38548 rubella cases (incidence rate 100.1/ 100 000) were notified. Geographically, rubella cases were reported from the entire country, with the highest incidence rate in Malopolska province (254.9/100 000). Only 5 cases from Malopolska and 120 in whole country were laboratory confirmed, the remaining 99.7% were reported solely on the basis of clinical signs. The vaccination coverage was not sufficient to protect the population against rubella outbreak in Poland, especially among adolescents and young adult males. Conclusions. The strengthening of routine immunization program and implementation of some additional vaccination campaigns in young adults as well as laboratory confirmation of all suspected cases are the challenges that will have to be met to eliminate rubella in Poland

Since ancient times, man has ridden horses. Ancient Greeks and Romans, who did so mostly for utilitarian purposes, also found that horse riding was the source of rider’s health, recommending equestrianism to men and women of different ages as an exercise that helped preserve a healthy body. Poles, a nation whose history was always linked in a rather exceptional way with horses and horsemanship, realized quite early, at the beginning of the 17th century, that horse riding offered a variety of applications and could be used as a tool to improve human fitness and physical condition. Views of Polish hippologists such as Krzysztof Moniwid Dorohostajski and Marian Hutten-Czapski on health-related benefits of equestrianism gained popularity not only in Poland but also abroad. At the beginning of the 20th century, their opinions were endorsed by a Polish doctor, Władysław Hojnacki, who campaigned for horse riding to be used as therapy. After WW2, a distinguished Polish orthopedist and physiotherapist, Professor Marian Weiss introduced an innovative hippotherapeutic program at the Medical Center for Rehabilitation of the Locomotive Organs in Konstancin near Warsaw, finding many followers who helped hippotherapy to develop. Research confirmed that horse riding was indeed an effective form of therapy and this soon led to the establishment of the Polish Hippotherapeutic Society, organization of conferences and seminars providing a platform where views and research results could be exchanged, and starting a number of equestrian facilities across the country that popularized hippotherapy in Poland.

22 moldavite species from four different localizations from Poland have been found since 2012. 20 of them are genetically connected with the Gozdnica Fm. (Miocene). Two more were found in Pleistocene sediments, which are part of the Nysa Łużyca terrace river sediments. In last two years, three more moldavites have been collected from Poland. Two specimens were found in Gozdnica, and one in the Lipna village, which is located ~7 km west of Gozdnica.

The work discusses the formation of the annual total runoff of Polish rivers as a function of changes in the annual values of climatic elements. The results of the analysis show that in the years 1966–2015, 40–50% of the runoff variance in a hydrological year was determined by the variability of climatic elements that occurred in the preceding year, and 20–30% in the same year. This indicates the occurrence of much stronger inertia in the variability of the runoff in relation to the variability of weather conditions. The main elements influencing the variability of the runoff are the annual rainfall and the annual air temperature in the preceding year, and in the same hydrological year – the variability of annual rainfall, sunshine duration and air temperature. The runoff from the area of Poland shows a strong relationship (R = 0.82) with the de Martonne climate aridity indices, the variability of which in the preceding and the current year together explains ~66% of its variance.

Malignancies were one of the earliest diagnosed manifestations that resulted in the description of acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS). Most cancers in AIDS patients are associated with coinfection with oncogenic viruses. Knowledge and public awareness about HIV infectious materials are important elements in preventing the spread of HIV infections. The aim of the study was to assess the knowledge about HIV infectious materials among three populations in Poland. A Poland-wide on-line survey was conducted and 2205 anonymous answers were analysed. Almost half of the answers came from students, of which 40% were medical students.

Given the seriousness and negative consequences of the ambush marketing phenomenon, it was necessary to fight with great force and strength ambush marketing activities by developing effective prevention strategies. There might be two categories of strategies distinguished: reactive and proactive strategies (Burton & Chadwick, 2008). The most common proactive strategy is to pass normative acts regulating the issues of ambush marketing by the host-country of the sporting event. The purpose of this paper is an analysis of Polish preparations to host the 2012 UEFA European Football Championship in the context of the legal response to unfair practices of ambush marketing. The scope of existing legislation of general application provides sufficient protection for the obligations arising from the Polish international agreements. Issues relating to the protection of intellectual property rights are governed by acts dealing with combating unfair competition, copyright and industrial property law. Poland has not introduced additional regulations protecting the rights of the organizers and official sponsors of major sporting events against fraudulent marketing activities. When analyzing the current legal status it can be concluded that Poland fulfilled the guarantees provided to UEFA. The government adopted the simplest solution: they accepted the facts and did not make any amendments to the existing legal system.

The subject of the paper is an analysis of the type of clouds in Poland in 1996–2020 on the low, middle and high levels. Daily data on cloud types and the cloudiness of the low-level from 36 IMWM-NRI stations were used. In the analysed multi-year period, the highest share of low-level clouds was observed (56%), followed by mid-level clouds (23%), and the lowest share of high-level clouds (21%). There was a slight decrease in the share of low-level clouds, and an increase in the share of middle and high levels clouds in the analysed period. The share of low-level clouds was highest in the cool season and during the afternoon and night hours; it was lowest in the summer, and early morning and evening hours. The middle and high levels had the highest share in the summer and during the early evening and early morning hours. These levels were least frequent in the winter, and around noon for the mid-level, and at night for the high-level. The Cumulus humilis and Stratocumulus cugen clouds were most frequently observed on the low-level during low cloudiness. Stratus fractus and Cumulonimbus capillatus were most frequently observed during total and high cloudiness on the low-level. In the warm season and the daytime, clouds are more isolated; in the cool season, they form more dense cloud layers.

The subject of the paper is the influence of atmospheric circulation on the content of suspended PM10 in the air in Konin. For this purpose dust concentrations from the period 2012–2016 were generally characterized. PM10 particulate matter concentration average hourly data were obtained from the Main Inspectorate of Environmental Protection website. Based on these data, long-term, seasonal and daily changes in the PM10 concentration in the atmosphere were investigated. The study analysed the daily variability of the PM10 suspended particulate matter concentration to present seasonal differences (in hot and cold seasons). In order to determine the influence of atmospheric circulation on the PM10 particulate matter concentration, the concentration levels data were compared with the types of circulation prevailing on the same day. In this study according to synoptic maps the days with maximum and minimum concentrations PM levels were analysed. It was found which type of meteorological circulation is conducive to higher levels concentrations of particulate matter PM10, and which has a positive effect on the quality of the air in Konin.

The purpose of the research is to determine the types of course of the coefficients of water stages on pentads on the hydrological year. The research distinguishes five main types and seven subtypes of pentad coefficients of the water stages of lakes in Poland in the average annual cycle. For the analysis, the daily values of water levels of 75 lakes located in the Polish Lowlands in years 1976-2015 were used. The data were obtained from the Institute of Meteorology and Water Management – National Research Institute. For each lake, the coefficient of water stages, for all 73 pentads of the hydrological year, was calculated. Pentadic values of water stage coefficients were the basis for hierarchical grouping of the lakes using Ward’s method. On the basis of dendrogram analysis, 5 main groups of lakes with a different coefficient of water storage in the annual cycle were distinguished – so-called types of the course of pentad coefficient of water stages. The types distinguished differ in the beginning, end and duration of high and low water stages, as well as the variability of the coefficient of water stage in pentads of the hydrological year. Type 1 – with a small range of W coefficient parameter changes throughout the year is characteristic of coastal lakes, in type 2 lakes, high water stages are observed in the summer-autumn period, low stages in spring. In the remaining types, high water stages are usually observed in spring and low in the summer-autumn period.
