Headache are very common in general population. Annual incidences different types of headaches are estimated on 51%, and chronic headaches on 4%. Effective pharmacological treatment improves patients quality of life. In recent years some progress associated with the introduction of new drugs and their pharmacological forms was observed in extemporary treatment. Treatment of chronic headaches is still insufficient, and in many cases ineffective. Comparative studies indicate that in mild and moderate headaches triptans have comparable efficacy with non steroid anti-inflammatory drugs. In strong migraine, triptans are the gold standard of migraine medicines, with sumatriptan as a leading representative. They are effective in more than 70% of the patients. In recent Times for the prophylactic treatment of migraine botulin toxin was introduced. In the treatment of chronic tension type headaches known as trigemino-autonomic headaches (TABG) most commonly occurs cluster headache. The most effective way of treatment is breathing pure oxygen and fast acting triptans and steroids. In prophylactic treatment more effective is verapamil in high-dose. In the treatment of other forms of TABG more effective were antiepileptic drugs. In paroxysmal hemicranias and hemicranias continua more effective is indomethacin. Current statement of Polish Headache Society for treatment of primary headaches is based on the results of the latest research and recommendations on this subject.
