Wyjaśniono różne podejścia do oceny ilości wody zawartej w glebie w tym: grawimetryczną zawartość wody (GWC), potencjał wody glebowej i pojemność wodną gleby (WHC).

Presented are main factors influencing the ability of soil for water retention, like soil structure, organic matter content and interaction of water molecules with weak chemical bonds. Explained are various approaches to determination of the amount of water contained in soil, such as gravimetric water content (GWC), potential of soil water and water holding capacity (WHC). Outlined is the relationship between water content in soil and metabolism of soil microorganisms, as well as the mechanisms involved in soil drying and watering. Influence of global climatic changes upon soil's potential to retain water is discussed in connection with the occurrence of more frequent droughts and torrent rains.
