The aim of this study was to investigate the defence styles of individuals with type D personality. The study involved 62 individuals: 31 were respondents diagnosed with the coronary heart disease and 31 healthy subjects (without any cardiovascular system conditions). The average age in both groups was 61 years. Three research techniques were used in the study: a survey including demographic and medical parameters; a questionnaire for the evaluation of the type D personality – DS14 designed by Denollet; Defense Style Questionnaire DSQ- 40 designed by Bond and Wesley (1996). The subjects with the distressed personality made use of all defence styles, but they chose the least adaptive the most often. The non-adaptive style, imaginatively-distorting style and self-sacrificing style were presented more frequently by individuals with the distressed personality, while the adaptive style was chosen more often by respondents not demonstrating any traits of the type D personality. Meanwhile, the non-adaptive style prevailed in both study groups. The type D personality is associated most strongly with such defence mechanisms, as: somatization, consumption activities, projection, sublimation, acting out, regression, reaction formation, social withdrawal, fantasy and isolation. The defence mechanisms of suppression and inhibition are not specific for the distressed personality.
Summary. The presented study is a part of project aimed at finding the sources of aggression among children in early school age. Exploratory research included 48 children, their parents (41 mothers, 19 fathers) and 2 teachers. To examine the relationship between the intensity of aggressive behaviour among pupils and emotionality of their parents, the following methods have been applied: Emotional Control Questionnaire by J. Brzeziński, Type D Scale by N. Ogińska-Bulik, Z. Juczyński and J. Denollet and the Student Behaviour Rating Scale by I. Grzankowska. The analyses have shown that mothers’ motivation to behave rationally is positively correlated with indirect aggression among children whereas fathers’ cognitive control of emotogeneous situations correlates negatively with the number of acts of physical aggression acts taken by children at school. The results indicate that parents emotional control could predict children aggressive behaviour. Due to a limited sample size, replication of the research is recommended. Key words: parents emotional control, type D personality, aggressive behaviours, children
INTRODUCTION: Due to the importance of the problem for public health and the current lack of agreement between published observations regarding the type of personality that may be associated with an increased risk of cancer, a study was carried out to assess the incidence and basic demographic, social and health circumstances of the presence of type D personality and its diagnostic components in patients with colorectal cancer. MATERIAL AND METHODS: 200 patients diagnosed with colorectal cancer participated in the questionnaire study. In order to identify the final predictors influencing the incidence of type D personality and its diagnostic components, a logistic regression analysis was performed, along with verification of the parameterization using the automatic backward selection method. RESULTS: 55% of the respondents in the study group had type D personality traits. Among the determinants influencing the incidence of type D personality, the following variables were: gender, education, satisfaction with medical care, the presence of chronic diseases and the patient’s physical fitness. 89.5% of the respondents were qualified to the negative affectivity (negatywna emocjonalność – NE) dimension, and 57.5% of the respondents met the criteria of the social inhibition (hamowanie społeczne – HS) dimension. Among the determinants influencing the incidence of the NE dimension there were the following variables: religion, financial situation and the presence of chronic diseases. The incidence of the HS dimension was influenced by the following variables: gender, education, satisfaction with medical care and the patient’s physical fitness. CONCLUSIONS: Type D personality is more common in women, among patients with lower than secondary education and among patients with chronic diseases. The NE dimension is more frequent in patients with chronic diseases, satisfied with their financial situation and declaring religious values. The HS dimension is more frequent in women and among patients with a lower than secondary education.

MATERIAŁ I METODY: W badaniu kwestionariuszowym wzięło udział 200 pacjentów z rozpoznanym rakiem jelita grubego. W celu zidentyfikowania ostatecznych predyktorów mających wpływ na występowanie osobo-wości typu D i jej diagnostycznych składowych wykonano analizę regresji logistycznej wraz z weryfikującą parametryzacją za pomocą automatycznej selekcji wstecznej. WYNIKI: W całej grupie cechy osobowości typu D miało 55% badanych. Wśród uwarunkowań mających wpływ na występowanie osobowości typu D były zmienne: płeć, wykształcenie, zadowolenie z opieki medycznej, występowanie chorób przewlekłych oraz stan sprawności pacjenta. Do wymiaru negatywna emocjonalność (NE) zakwalifikowano 89,5% badanych, natomiast do wymiaru hamowanie społeczne (HS) 57,5% badanych.
