An organic-inorganic hybrid catalyst (SMSNP-PIP) was prepared by post synthesis grafting of piperidine functionalized organosilane on uniform spherical mesoporous silica nano particle of 600 nm size by using surface hydroxyl groups as anchor point. It was characterized by N2 adsorption analysis, HRTEM, CHN analysis, 13C CP MAS and 29 Si MAS NMR and FTIR analysis. The nano silica particles possess narrow slit-like pores with diameters of 2.6 nm. The wide applicability of this catalyst was probed in the chromatography free synthesis of 2-amino-3,5-dicarbonitrile-6-arylthio-pyridines in water. Synthesis using water as a solvent is of paramount importance for its sustainable green impact. Further, water was the only by-product which added to its attractiveness.
