The aim of the study was to establish the role of posttraumatic growth for health behaviors of people in late adulthood period. The analyzed research group was 130 people in the age of 61-88 lat (M = 71,32; SD = 5,81), 60 were men (46,2% ) and 70 (53,8%) women. The group consisted of 70 generally healthy people – the participants of the Third Age University, and 60 patients of cardiology clinic. The research tools were Health Behaviors Inventory authored by Juczynski (2001) – to measure health behaviors, and Posttraumatic Growth Inventory (authored by Tedeschi and Calhoun (1996), in polish adaptation of Ogińskia-Bulik and Juczyński (2010)) – to measure posttraumatic growth. The responded seniors exhibited an average level of posttraumatic growth and above-average level of health behaviors. Age did not differentiated the level of health behaviors. Gender and type of traumatic experience were associated with health behaviors. The correlation and regression analysis confirmed the role of gender, type of trauma and posttraumatic growth indicators in manifesting health behaviors by seniors. The importance of posttraumatic growth in predicting health behaviors was different depending on the category of health-related behaviors.
The occurrence of traumatic events is fairly common – approximately 70% of people experience them. The results of research conducted in recent years indicate that the experience of traumatic events entails the occurrence of adverse effects, among which all the symptoms of a posttraumatic stress disorder are mentioned, but also there are positive changes, expressed in the form of posttraumatic growth. Among the conditions of negative and positive consequences of experienced trauma, a special role is attributed to cognitive activity, including rumination. Rumination related to a specific event can play diverse roles. One of them, termed intrusive, are automatically appearing thoughts which a person is unable to control, and which are not linked to attempts to solve the problem. This type of rumination is similar to intrusion, although the concepts are not identical. On the other hand, rumination called reflective or intentional is of a constructive nature, serving to attempt to solve the problem. Intrusive rumination favours the occurrence of posttraumatic stress disorder symptoms, and deliberate rumination – posttraumatic growth. The article focuses on the role of rumination in the occurrence of negative, but mostly – due to the novelty of the technique – positive effects of the experienced trauma. Research indicating the associations of rumination both with the symptoms of posttraumatic stress disorder and posttraumatic growth is presented. A revised model of posttraumatic growth has been presented, which emphasises the importance of rumination, both intrusive and deliberate. The article also contains consideration over further directions of research in this area and practical implications, related primarily to promote posttraumatic growth.

Positive changes after a traumatic severe illness have still not been fully described. One of the groups that lack full research of posttraumatic growth are patients with stoma. Difficult moments of surgery and dealing with stoma are for many of them the hardest situations of all life. Some of the patient must face emotional, social and self-perception changes in their lifes. Being a part of stomic societies is a chance for personal development for many of patients, it gives them social and institutional support and a chance to meet people in similar situation. Two groups were considered in present study: one was a group of stomic patient and another was a group of people taking part in the University of the Third Age. Emotional traits (STPI), acceptance of illness (AIS), multidimensional health locus of control (MHLC) and posttraumatic growth (PTGI) were taken into consideration. Data analysis have given very optimistic view on functioning of present groups and abilities to get on with the illness. There have been only small differences between two groups. These participants react in a very similar way and in the same way they experience the posttraumatic growth. This research is a good introduction into the field of posttraumatic positive changes for stomic patients as the special case of trauma that still lasts. Correlations between emotional traits and posttraumatic growth will surely bring new ways of psychological work with these patients.
