With increasing age, the frequency of chronic pain increases compared to acute pain. This is due to structural and functional changes caused by ageing of the nervous system. The aim of this study was to investigate relationships between personality traits, optimism, quality of life, and subjective assessment of pain measured experimentally with an algometer and clinically with the Visual Analoque Scale (VAS). In the group of 133 seniors (61-86 years; 78% women), we used an algometer to measure pain threshold and tolerance, the VAS scale to assess subjective intensity, and standardized questionnaires (EPQ-R(s), LOTR, SWLS) to measure psychological variables. Extraversion was found to promote both higher pain threshold and higher pain tolerance, whereas pain tolerance was negatively correlated with neuroticism. Higher severity of the psychotic trait was associated with more intense subjective pain experience. Optimism and overall quality of life were not associated with any pain measures. A better understanding of the personality correlates of pain perception could support a more accurate tailoring of pain management in elderly patients.
The sudden loss of mobility is always an extremely difficult situation, since it entails many consequences. In the process of dealing with it, the individual’s predispositions play a significant role. Three predispositions seem to be crucial for maintaining emotional balance, accepting the existing health situation and coping with challenges: dispositional optimism, a sense of self-efficacy and psychological resilience. The aim of our study was to compare the levels of these individual predispositions and dimensions that affected the ability of the study group to cope with the sudden loss of mobility as a result of a traffic accident, and to determine the relationships between them. The study group consisted of 72 adults (36 women and 36 men), who suffered from full paralysis of the lower limbs due to spinal cord injury caused by a traffic accident. The research tools used were the GSES Scale, the LOT-R Test, the SPP-25 N Scale, the Beck Depression Scale, the AIS Scale and the CISS Questionnaire. The women in our study exhibited lower levels of all three of the selected predispositions. They also present more severe symptoms of depression and a lower acceptance of the loss of mobility. When facing stressful situations, they prefer the emotion-oriented style and, less frequently, the avoidant style, and they reveal a lower tendency to choose the task-oriented response. Dispositional optimism, self-efficacy and resilience positively correlate with acceptance of the disability and the use of a task-oriented style to cope with stress. However, they correlate negatively with the severity of depressive symptoms and a style focused on emotions. Gender is a moderator of relationships between the studied parameters.
Background. The aim of the work was to analyze eating habits of soccer players depending on selected personal resources (the level of dispositional optimism and satisfaction with life). Material and methods. Study participants were 203 professional soccer players aged 18-37. The study involved an original validated eating habits questionnaire including the recommendations of the Swiss food pyramid for sports people, Life Orientation Test-Revised (LOT-R), and Satisfaction With Life Scale (SWLS). The Chi^2 test was used to analyze the results. Test probability of p<0.05 was regarded as significant, and p<0.01 and p<0.001, as highly significant. Results: The players with a high level of dispositional optimism significantly more often declared having regular meals (94.12% vs 76.30%, p=0.001), eating wholegrain cereal products at least twice a day (86.67% vs 69.12%, p<0.01), appropriate rehydration during exercise (97.06% vs 83.70%; p<0.01) and avoiding energy drinks (82.35% vs 68.89%; p<0.05) and sweet fizzy drinks (85.29% vs 68.15%; p<0.01). Players with high satisfaction with life significantly more often consumed wholegrain cereal products (87.95% vs 75.83%; p<0.05), milk and/or dairy products (85.54% vs 67.59%; p<0.01), they limited the consumption of animal fats (73.49% vs 51.67%; p=0.001) and had a varied diet (90.36% vs 80.00%; p<0.05). Conclusions: The study demonstrated differences in some eating habits of professional soccer players depending on the analyzed personal resources. Players with higher levels of dispositional optimism and satisfaction with life displayed more rational eating habits.

Wstęp. Analiza zachowań żywieniowych grupy piłkarzy nożnych w zależności od wybranych zasobów osobistych (poziomu dyspozycyjnego optymizmu i satysfakcji z życia). Materiał i metody. Badania przeprowadzono w grupie 203 zawodników w wieku 18-37 lat wyczynowo trenujących piłkę nożną. Zastosowano autorski kwestionariusz zachowań żywieniowych uwzględniający rekomendacje szwajcarskiej piramidy żywienia sportowców oraz Test Orientacji Życiowej (LOT-R) i Skalę Satysfakcji z Życia (SWLS). Analizę wyników przeprowadzono z zastosowaniem testu zależności Chi^2. Za istotne przyjęto prawdopodobieństwo testowe na poziomie p<0,05, a za wysoce istotne na poziomie p<0,01 i p<0,001. Wyniki: Zawodnicy o wysokim poziomie dyspozycyjnego optymizmu istotnie częściej deklarowali regularność posiłków (94,12% vs 76,30%, p=0,001), spożywanie produktów zbożowych pełnoziarnistych przynajmniej 2 razy dziennie (86,67% vs 69,12%, p<0,01), prawidłowe nawadnianie się w czasie wysiłku fizycznego (97,06% vs 83,70%; p<0,01) oraz unikanie spożywania napojów energetyzujących (82,35% vs 68,89%; p<0,05) i gazowanych słodkich (85,29% vs 68,15%; p<0,01).
INTRODUCTION Nursing and midwifery require mental immunity, resistance to stress and the ability to cope with difficulties. Optimism has a positive influence on one's physical condition. It helps to be successful in life and resist stressful events. It is also closely connected with emotional functioning. MATERIALS AND METHODS The research was carried out on fifty nurses and midwives – “Ethics in nursing” training participants. Their optimism was measured by Poprawa and Juczyński’s adaptation of the Life Orientation Test – LOT-R. The emotions were measured by Juczyński’s adaptation of the Courtauld Emotional Control Scale – CECS. Additionally, the authors' demographic data questionnaire was used. It included questions about the education level, marital status and the number of children. The hypotheses were verified by Spearman's Rank Correlation Coefficient Test, the Mann-Whitney Rank Test and the Kruskal-Wallis Test. RESULTS The research proved the influence of optimism on emotional control. It showed how education and having a family affect the level of optimism and emotional control. CONCLUSIONS Optimism functions as protection and effectively influences the ability to express emotions. An optimistic attitude is higher among nurses and midwives with a college degree, which does not affect the expression of emo-tions. Marital status and the number of offspring do not influence the level of optimism or the ability to express emotions.

Aim: Many scientific reports indicate that optimism positively affects our psychophysical well-being. The main purpose of the conducted research was to verify whether optimism is a predictor of health-oriented resources also in patients with paranoid schizophrenia, depressive disorders and depressive schizoaffective disorders. The following health-oriented factors were evaluated in the study: health behaviour, life satisfaction, social functioning and coping with stress. Furthermore, we have verified whether there were any differences related to the level of optimism and health-oriented factors between individuals with mental disorders and a control group. Methods: The following tools were used in the study: Optimism Questionnaire, Health-Related Behaviour Inventory, Coping Inventory for Stressful Situations, Satisfaction with Life Scale, Social and Occupational Functioning Assessment Scale, Beck Depression Inventory. Results: Effects of optimism on some of the health-oriented factors were observed in patients with mental disorders as well as in healthy individuals. Significant differences in the level of health-oriented resources between the study population and controls were reported. Conclusions: The study suggests that generalisation of the conclusions regarding healthy population to individuals with mental disorders should be done with caution. Further research is needed to investigate the health behaviour determinants in patients with mental disorders.
