Diabetes mellitus (DM) is a group of metabolic diseases which typically presents with frequent urination, increased thirst and increased hunger. DM be classified into three main types: type I (insulin-dependent DM), type-II (non-insulin dependent DM) and type III (gestational DM). Diabetes is a group of diseases of global health significance as 382 million people worldwide had diabetes in the year 2013 and this was projected to increase to an estimated 415 million in 2015. Damage to the nerves of the body (diabetic neuropathy) is the most common complication of diabetes. The signs and symptoms of diabetic neuropathy include numbness, diminished sensation, pain etc. Various types of electrotherapy, such as transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS), pulsed-dose electrical stimulation, frequency-modulated electromagnetic neural stimulation, have been reported effective in managing diabetic neuropathy. This study is a systematic review of the evidence to enable the determination of the effectiveness of electrical stimulation and low-intensity laser therapy (LILT), and also aid their recommendation if proven to be effective. The outcome of this study was that TENS and other forms of electrical stimulation reviewed in this study may be effective and safe non-pharmacological treatment modalities in relieving the symptoms associated with diabetic neuropathy. The effectiveness of LILT couldn’t be determined due to the different parameters used to evaluate patients’ outcome and limited number of studies. Authors recommend that further randomized controlled trials with similar methodological parameters and studies with higher quality of evidences are needed to establish the true effectiveness of these modalities in diabetic neuropathy.
Retinal diseases account for the vast majority of ophthalmologic disorders. Over recent years, laser-based approaches have been successfully used for treatment. Despite the introduction of other potentially innovative, beneficial, and successful therapeutic methods, lasers are still considered the gold standard. This review discusses the spectrum of currently available laser methods and new insights into novel perspectives and techniques of the laser management of retinal disorders. This review is divided into three sections. First, we present the methodology and spectrum of laser-based techniques. Second, we conducted a literature review to investigate existing knowledge of the laser management of diabetic retinopathy, diabetic macular edema, and vascular retinal disorders. Third, we outline the principles that guide the laser treatment of retinal tears, retinal degeneration, retinopathy of prematurity, age-related macular degeneration, and other retinal diseases.

Choroby siatkówki stanowią dużą grupę schorzeń narządu wzroku. W leczeniu wielu z nich od lat z powodzeniem stosowana jest laseroterapia. Mimo prób wprowadzania do terapii innych metod leczniczych nadal pozostaje jedną z głównych opcji terapeutycznych. W pracy przedstawiono przegląd piśmiennictwa dotyczący zastosowania laseroterapii w chorobach siatkówki, z uwzględnieniem nowych rodzajów i sposobów laseroterapii. Pracę podzielono na trzy części. W części pierwszej, publikowanej w niniejszym numerze przedstawiono metodykę i rodzaje zabiegów laserowych.
W pracy przedstawiono rezultaty kompleksowej fizjoterapii pacjenta w okresie zaostrzeń POChP w latach 1997-2005. Omówiono możliwości i efekty stymulacji laserem niskiej energii wybranych, biologicznie aktywnych, punktów (BAP) oraz jej wpływ na przyrost parametrów FVC, FEV1, PEF, a także wpływ stymulacji na tolerancję wysiłku fizycznego ocenioną na podstawie 6-minutowego testu marszu. Oceniono wydatek energetyczny pacjenta w METs i zmiany w subiektywnym odczuwaniu duszności na podstawie skali Borga. Uzyskane wyniki oraz poprawa parametrów spirometrycznych sugerują przydatność stymulacji laserem niskiej energii w fizjoterapii zaostrzeń POChP.

The article presents the effects of complex physiotherapy carried out in a group of patients during acute stages of COPD between 1997 and 2005. It discusses the effects and possibilities of application of low power laser stimulation on trigger points and its influence on the increase in FVC, FEV1, PEF parameters as well as on physical endurance levels assessed by means of the six-minute walking test. Energy expenditure was measured in METs, and Borg Scale was used to show changes in subjective perception of dyspnea. The obtained results as well as the improvement of spirometric test parameters indicate beneficial effects of low power laser stimulation in cases of patients with acute stages of COPD.
Cel i założenia. Celem przeprowadzonych badań było wykazanie wpływu stymulacji laserem niskiej energii biologicznie aktywnych punktów (BAP), odpowiedzialnych za odruchową regulację funkcjonowania oskrzeli i płuc, na wybrane parametry opisujące czynność wentylacyjną pacjentów z zaostrzeniami POChP. Materiał i metoda. Wnioski. Uzyskane wyniki badań: istotna poprawa (p < 0,01) parametrów FVC, FEV1, PEF w grupie badawczej sugerują celowość włączenia stymulacji laserowej do kompleksowej fizjoterapii oddechowej pacjentów z zaostrzeniami POChP.

Aims and assumptions. The aim of this study was to show the impact of low level laser stimulation of BAP (Biologically Active Points), responsible for involuntary control of the bronchi and lungs, on selected spirometric parameters characterising respiratory capacity in patients with acute stages of COPD. Material and method. The study was conducted on a group of 40 patients, who had been divided into two subgroups - the control group and the research group, which, apart from the standard treatment, had been subjected to laser stimulation. Wilcoxon Matched-Pairs Signed-Ranks Test and Mann-Whitney U Test were used for the purposes of statistical analysis. Conclusions. Findings showed a significant improvement (p < 0.01) of FVC, FEV1 and PEF in the research group, which confirms that inclusion of laser stimulation in rehabilitation of patients with acute stages of COPD might be beneficial.
