Cobalt occurs in nature primarily as arsenides, oxides and sulphides. It is an essential element necessary for the formation of vitamin B12. It is also indispensable for regular growth of animals, plankton, and plants life. For the general population the diet is the main source of exposure to cobalt. The toxic effect due to environmental exposure has not been detected so far with the exception of cardiomyopathy in beer drinkers. Contaminated soils in the vicinity of industrial emittors pose a particular threat to children.

W środowisku naturalnym kobalt występuje w minerałach siarczkowych, tlenkowych i arsenkowych. Jest pierwiastkiem śladowym niezbędnym do syntezy witaminy B12. Jest również nieodzowny dla prawidłowego rozwoju zwierząt, planktonu i wzrostu roślin. Dieta jest głównym źródłem dowozu kobaltu. Działanie toksyczne, w wyniku narażenia komunalnego populacji generalnej, nie zostało dotąd odnotowane z wyjątkiem kardiomiopatii u piwoszy. Zanieczyszczona gleba w pobliżu emitorów przemysłowych może stanowić zagrożenie zdrowotne dla małych dzieci.
