Bacterial endotoxins are lipopolysaccharide (LPS) macromolecular complexes, located in the outer cell membrane of Gram-negative bacteria. They consist of three parts: lipid A, oligosaccharide core and antigen 0, which have assigned functions. Endotoxins are one of the basic components of bioaerosols. Although they are generally present in the environment, their main sources are workplaces, work plants emitting organic dust. The highest concentrations of endotoxins are determined in workplaces related to: agriculture, animal husbandry, textile industry, composting plants and sewage treatment plants. Endotoxins are highly biologically active and they can induce inflammatory reactions of the body. Workers at risk often report respiratory disorders, gastrointestinal problems and developing inflammation (e.g. fever, malaise).

Endotoksyny bakteryjne stanowią lipopolisachardowe (LPS) kompleksy makrocząsteczkowe, znajdujące się w błonie zewnętrznej bakterii Gram-ujemnych. Zbudowane są z trzech części: lipidu A, oligosacharydowego rdzenia oraz antygenu 0, z których każda pełni odpowiednie funkcje. Endotoksyny są jednym z podstawowych składników bioaerozoli. Chociaż powszechnie występują w środowisku naturalnym, to głównym ich źródłem są zakłady pracy emitujące pył organiczny. Najwyższe stężenia endotoksyn notowane są m.in. na stanowiskach pracy związanych z: rolnictwem, hodowlą zwierząt, przemysłem włókienniczym, w kompostowniach oraz oczyszczalniach ścieków. Endotoksyny charakteryzują się dużą aktywnością biologiczną i mogą inicjować reakcje zapalne organizmu. Pracownicy narażeni na ich oddziaływanie najczęściej zgłaszają dolegliwości ze strony układu oddechowego, pokarmowego oraz rozwijającego się procesu zapalnego (np. gorączka, złe samopoczucie).
