Objective: The aim of the study was to verification the hypotheses about the relationship of trauma suffered in early childhood, alexithymia and dissociation with the power of the body self. Furthermore, it was examined whether regular physical activity as well as its type may affect the power of the body self. Material and method: The study involved 56 persons – 31 women (55.4%) (average age: M = 31.7) and 25 men (44.6%) (average age: M = 35.3). The subjects were divided into three groups: persons beginning yoga practice, persons starting exercises to improve their fitness (gym) and persons who were not taking any regular physical exercise. Self-description questionnaires were used to assess the intensity of: trauma – the Traumatic Experiences Checklist (TEC), alexithymia – the Toronto Alexithymia Scale (TAS-20), dissociation – the Curious Experiences Survey (CES) as well as a questionnaire for the body self. The assessment was conducted twice: after the recruitment of a given participant and after 3 months from the end of the first stage. Results: It was established that trauma, alexithymia and dissociation are significant predictors of the power of the body self in the study group. Emotional neglect and emotional abuse were demonstrated to have a particularly strong impact. In the case of alexithymia, the difficulty in identifying emotions and the difficulty in verbalising them were highly relevant with respect to the power of the body self. Dissociation had a significant impact on the power of the body self. As a result of physical activity, the power of the body self underwent statistically significant change as far as the interpretation of sensations in terms of emotions was concerned and the effect was greater in the group of persons practising yoga. Discussion: The results obtained not only shed new light on the pathogenic influence of trauma, alexithymia and dissociation on the power of the body self, but also demonstrated that a particular form of physical activity can, by increasing the level of interoception, change the power of the body self with respect to the ability to distinguish emotions from physical sensations. Conclusion: Traumatic experiences in early childhood become the basis for fostering permanent defence mechanisms: alexithymia and dissociation. It is these mechanisms, not the traumatic experience itself, which contribute to the development of the disorders of the body self. As it is clear from the analysis, the greatest role in this process is attributable to the difficulties in identifying emotions and depersonalisation.

Cel: Celem badania była weryfikacja hipotez dotyczących związku traumy doznanej we wczesnym dzieciństwie, aleksytymii i dysocjacji z siłą Ja cielesnego. Ponadto sprawdzono, czy regularna aktywność fizyczna i jej rodzaj mogą wpływać na siłę Ja cielesnego. Materiał i metoda: W badaniu wzięło udział 56 osób – 31 kobiet (55,4%) (średnia wieku: M = 31,7) i 25 mężczyzn (44,6%) (średnia wieku: M = 35,3). Badani zostali podzieleni na trzy grupy: rozpoczynających praktykę jogi, rozpoczynających ćwiczenia poprawiające kondycję fizyczną (siłownia) oraz niewykonujących regularnie żadnych ćwiczeń fizycznych. Wykorzystano kwestionariusze samoopisowe do badania natężenia traumy – Traumatic Experiences Checklist (TEC), aleksytymii – Toronto Alexithymia Scale (TAS-20), dysocjacji – Curious Experiences Survey (CES), a także kwestionariusz Ja cielesnego. Wskutek aktywności fizycznej istotnej statystycznie zmianie ulegała siła Ja cielesnego w zakresie interpretacji doznań w kategorii emocji, a siła efektu okazała się większa w grupie osób praktykujących jogę.
The dissociated core structure of dislocation in two-dimensional triangular lattice is determined by the variational method within lattice theory. The dissociation effect leads to a narrower core width of partial dislocations than the compact one. The equilibrium separation between two partial dislocations is not very sensitive to the intrinsic stacking fault energy and there exists deviation from the intrinsic stacking fault energy criterion in the continuous elastic theory of dislocation. The relationship between the equilibrium separation and intrinsic stacking fault energy is analogous in lattice theory and the Peierls-Nabarro model. But the equilibrium separation obtained in lattice theory is wider than that obtained in the Peierls-Nabarro model for the same intrinsic stacking fault energy.
Aim of the study: Notwithstanding its clinical and empirical relevance, there is no consensus on how to conceptualize dissociation. This may be partly due to the conflicting results yielded on the factor structure of the gold-standard selfreport measure of dissociation (the Dissociative Experiences Scale-Revised; DES-II, Carlson and Putnam, 1993). In an attempt to advance research on this topic, we sought to explore the factorial structure of an Italian version of the DES-II. Material and methods: A sample of 320 subjects (122 inmates and 198 community participants) was administered the Italian version of the DES-II. Results: The Italian version of the DES-II showed good psychometric properties and replicated a two-factor structure. Items content seemed to support the distinction into two qualitatively different forms of dissociative experiences, described as detachment and compartmentalization phenomena. In line with the expectations, participants in the inmate sample reported higher rates of dissociative experiences than community participants, on both dimensions. Conclusions: This study provides further support for the validity of the Italian version of the DES-II for use with community and inmate samples. Furthermore, we corroborated previous evidence on a two-factor structure of the DES-II, which is consistent with theoretical assumptions describing two distinct, albeit overlapping, dissociative dimensions (i.e., detachment and compartmentalization).

Materiał i metody: Badanie obejmowało próbę 320 osób (122 więźniów i 198 osób należących do populacji ogólnej). Zastosowano w nim włoską wersję skali DES-II. Wyniki: Włoska wersja skali DES-II wykazała dobre właściwości psychometryczne i została w niej zreplikowana struktura dwuczynnikowa.
The article presents a review of the literature about body image disorders in selected mental disorders, i.e. eating disorders, obesity, autodestructive behaviours and body dysmorphic disorder. The author defines the term of the body image, as referred to the terms: body schema and bodily self. She emphasizes the correlation between early childhood traumas and development of cognitive and emotional deformations related to the body, referring also to possibilities and limitations of therapeutic work. The first part introduces the way the body image present in literature is perceived, along with theoretical considerations on its nature, components and disorders resulting from its disturbances. Then she proc eeds to describe the characteristics and types of the body image deformities in eating disorders and obesity, emphasizing the conclusion drawn from the research, about the correlation between the body image distortion and the self-image distortion. Further on, the term bodily self is discussed, which highlights the significance of specific developmental disturbances for integration and arrangement of body-related experiences. The author emphasizes the contribution of early childhood traumas to the development of one’s pathological attitude to the body, including autodestructive behaviours. Another discussed subject is dissociative defence disorder underlying the states of bodily alienation and perhaps also autodestruction (as observed in eating disorders and borderline personality). The last part presents characteristics of body dysmorphic disorder, its clinical aspects and consequences. With the final conclusion the author closes her considerations about the correlation between the body image disorders and structural aspects of personality which are subjected to psychotherapy.
