The present state of science in microbial (classical) biotechnology in Poland is described.The main areas of research discussed in this paper include selection and industrial microorganisms improvement, optimization of biosynthesis processes, engineering aspects, techniques of immobilising cells and enzymes, processes of biotransformation and biodegradation, downstream processing and biotechnology in environmental protection.Special attention is paid to the problems of collaboration of scientific institutes with industry.The most important results in the above mentioned fields are also presented.
