Similarly to previous actions concerning elaboration of The Guidelines for the conduct of food safety assessment of food derived from recombinant DNA plants, The Codex Ad Hoc Intergovernmental Task Force on Foods Derived from Biotechnology has been working on an animal project. The aim of the working group is to develop a document entitled ?Guidelines for the Conduct of Food Safety Assessment of Foods Derived from Recombinant-DNA Animals'. The group met in May 2006, in Brussels. As a result of two working days, the final text with only a few points for further discussion has been prepared. The third meeting day was devoted to preparation of scientific questions regarding the use of ARMGs and non-heritable constructs in the modified animal and if/how this issue should be considered in this guideline. The draft Guideline will be submitted for further steps of the Codex procedure. At the discussion concerning the preparation of the Guideline, the involvement and engagement of particular countries and the political impact, as a part of the presented attitudes, were shown very clearly.
