The authors, using column, thin-layer, and ion-exchange chromatography, investigated carotenoid and carotenoprotein complex content in Cyclops kolensis specimens from an extremely eutrophic pond. The following carotenoids were found to be present: b-carotene, b-cryptoxanthin, lutein epoxide, crustaxanthin, 4?-hydroxyechinenone, canthaxanthin, and astaxanthin. Carotenoprotein complex containing astaxanthin as the prosthetic group name g-crustacyanine was purified from Cyclops kolensis individuals examined. The authors justify the adaptative role of these pigments in Cyclops kolensis specimens in extremely eutrophical conditions.

A carotenoprotein containing canthaxanthin (Crangon crangon) and astaxanthin (Palaemon adspersus) as the prosthetic group was purified from the body of two species of shrimp from the Baltic Sea. The protein forming the complexes with the above- mentioned ketocarotenoids in these shrimps were found to contain 17 amino acids, mainly glutamine, lysine in Crangon crangon and glutamine, aspargine in Palaemon adspersus. There was little cysteine found in the protein of the two shrimp species.

A grey carotenoprotein containing canthaxanthin and phoenicoxanthin as the prosthetic group, was purified from the body of the Mesidotea entomon from the Baltic Sea. The analysis of the proteins forming the complexes with the above mentioned ketocarotenoids were found to contain 17 amino acids, mainly aspargine, glutamine, lysine, serine, alanine, valine, and leucine with minimal amounts of methionine. In the carotenoprotein complex cysteine were not found.

The analysis of the proteins forming the complexes with the above-mentioned ketocarotenoids were found to contain 17 amino acids, mainly glycine, glutamine, proline, and asparagine with minimal amounts of methionine.
