Cytotoxicity of 22 amino acid 4-N-substitued cytosine derivatives was studied on KB and HeLa human tissue cultures. The secondary modification of tryptamine substituent seems to be a determining factor of the cytotoxic activity of 4-N-pyrimidinyl amino acids. The activity of the investigated compounds was inversely dependent on their solubility limited by the results of the solubility-activity relationship analysis.

The total of amino acid pools of three plant species common in Brullus Lake and belonging to different taxonomic groups were determined using LKB Alpha Plus high performance amino acid analyzer.The results indicated that presence of seventeen of common amino acids in these three different species, however, their concentrations varied.Glutamic acid represented the major constituent of amino acid pools separated from Inula erithmoides and Potamogeton pectinatus.Proline represented the major constituent of amino acid pool in Halimione portulacoides.The highest total content of amino acids was measured in , followed by Potamogeton pectinatus and Inula erithmoides.From the two sulphur containing amino acid: methionine and cysteine, only methionine was detected in all studied species.

A grey carotenoprotein containing canthaxanthin and phoenicoxanthin as the prosthetic group, was purified from the body of the Mesidotea entomon from the Baltic Sea. The analysis of the proteins forming the complexes with the above mentioned ketocarotenoids were found to contain 17 amino acids, mainly aspargine, glutamine, lysine, serine, alanine, valine, and leucine with minimal amounts of methionine. In the carotenoprotein complex cysteine were not found.

The effect of the amino acids l-cysteine (CYS-SH), l-aspartic acid (ASP-OH) and l-glutamic acid (GLU-OH), and of polycarboxylic acids (PCAs) on the biological activity of co-balt in cultures of Scenedesmus armatus (Chodat) and Synechocystis aquatilis (Sauvageau) was investigated. The influence of metal ions was determined by measurements of chlorophyll a content in the cultures and rates of carbon fixation by the phytoplankton cells. The addition of cobalt (2.5*10-6 M) to the cultures caused inhibition of growth, monitored by the chlorophyll a concentration and the photosynthetic rate of both green algae and cyano-bacteria. It was found that these acids significantly increased the chlorophyll a content in both algal species when treated with cobalt. Polycarboxylates, CYS-SH and ASP-OH also increased the rate of C-14 incorporation into algal cells in both cultures, whereas GLU-OH was effective in cultures of Synechocystis only.The results indicate that organic compounds, polycarboxylates and amino acids modify the biological activity of the cobalt. The environmental consequences of these processes are considered.

Three plant species belonging to Compositae, Chenopodiceae and Potamogetonaceae were collected from Burullus Lake.Hydrocarbon, sterol and fatty acid composition of each species were investigated and identified quantitatively using GLC technique.The result demonstrated that, the unasaponifiable matter of Inula erithmoides Halimione portulacoides and Potamogeton pectinatus was composed of, respectively 74.7% hydrocarbons and 25.3% sterol compounds; 73.6% hydrocarbons and 26.5% sterol compounds;100% hydrocarbons.Two sterols, namely cholesterol and stigmasterol, were detected in extracts of Inula erithmoides and Halimione portulacoides but at different concentrations.The analysis of saturated and unsaturated fatty acids indicated that the species studied differed in the number and concentration of fatty acids.

The paper presents the problem of protein isolation from yeasts cells using alkaline extraction and chemical modification of protein. The influence of these procedures on functional properties, amino acids level, nutritional value and enzyme digestibility is discussed.
