Second harmonic generation, created by nanosecond Nd : YAG laser pulses at 1.064 µm with relatively low intensity in Cd_{1-x}Mn_{x}Te bulk crystals and thin layers was measured in transmission geometry. The effect practically occurs in a very thin surface layer of the material and it is used as a relatively straightforward method of layer quality characterization. It is shown that the angular dependence of the second harmonic generation intensity in thin layers of CdTe with good crystallographic (and optical) quality agrees very well with the theory in contrary to the samples with some distortions from the ideal structure which exhibits large distortions from the theory.

GaAs:Zn whiskers grown by the gas-transport method are characterized by diffraction methods using white and monochromatic radiation. The methods applied include the white-beam topography at ESRF synchrotron source and Laue patterns, 4-circle Bond diffractometry and high-resolution diffractometry at conventional X-ray sources. The results obtained concern the growth morphology and defect structure. It is found that GaAs:Zn whiskers grown by the described method have the form of long needles and blades of the morphologies represented by growth direction and largest lateral face ⟨112⟩{111} and ⟨111⟩{112}, respectively, with a single exception of a blade of uncommon morphology ⟨111⟩{110}.

The introduction of lead-free technology into electronics has intensified concern over tin whiskers phenomenon. Tin whiskers are crystals growing from the alloy surface as the result of compressive stress relaxation. This paper presents the dependence of tin whisker growth on copper and oxygen surface content. The observations and measurements were done using scanning electron microscopy with energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy. The results show that whisker growth is strongly related to increased copper and oxygen surface content in whisker neighborhood.

The airfoils of single-crystalline turbine blades were studied. The blades made of industrial CMSX-4 superalloy were obtained by the Bridgman technique. Five different withdrawal rates (1-5 mm/min) were used. Series of as-cast samples were prepared by cutting the airfoils at different distances from the blade root. The metallographic sections, prepared for each cutting planes, were subjected to scanning electron microscopy observations and Laue diffraction studies. Macrostructure images of whole area of airfoil cross-sections were obtained by stitching several obtained SEM images. Morphology of dendrites in different area of cross-sections were analysed. The crystal orientation of each sample were determined by analysis of Laue pattern. It was found that the morphology of dendrites changes in the area, where the dendrite growth is limited by inclined mould walls.
