This paper deals with the ignition of a diffuse dielectric barrier discharge in air at atmospheric pressure with a high voltage rectangular pulse supply. The study is focused on the effects of dielectric materials. The current and voltage waveforms of discharges with different barriers look similar. But the discharge development process can be different. It is described by many synchronous electron avalanches in a case of alumina ceramics, and by a streamer - in a case of acrylic glass.

The paper presents the results of our theoretical investigations of fast electron beam generation in high-temperature plasma of a laser plume and further acceleration of electrons in atmosphere. The discharge formation in these inhomogeneous media was also investigated. Results of calculations have shown an opportunity of generation of fast beam with a current in a range ≈ 10^2 - 10^3 A from the laser plume with the length of 5 mm and the area of 0.1 mm^2. The main reason of limitation of fast electrons current pulse was the breakdown of the discharge gap. The preliminary experiments carried out by us have shown the correctness of chosen direction.

In the present paper, the review of the basic results obtained at the Laboratory of Optical Radiation at High Current Electronics Institute SB RAS during 2007-2009 years is presented. Efficient radiation of Ar_{2}, Kr_{2}, Xe_{2}, KrBr*, KrCl*, XeI*, XeBr*, XeCl*, Cl_{2}* molecules and I atoms was obtained in rare gas or in rare gas-Br_{2} (Cl_{2}, I_{2}) mixtures. Study of radiation parameters and lifetime period of the manufactured barrier discharge excilamps has been performed.

The results of experimental investigations of diffuse (volume) nanosecond elevated-pressure discharges in a non-uniform electric field at a time resolution of a recording system being equal to ≈100 ps are presented in this paper. The application of the runaway electrons preionized diffuse discharge is promising for obtaining high-power radiation pulses in the VUV and UV spectral region.
