Physics of THz Field-Effect Transistors

100%
EN
Field-effect transistors are nowadays considered as possible elements of THz detection and emission systems. Their THz performance is governed by excitations of two-dimensional plasma in the transistor channel. The paper discusses peculiarities of the photon-plasmon coupling mechanism in field-effect transistors and puts it in the perspective of classical investigation of plasma excitations in two-dimensional systems.

Friction and Wear Behavior in Plasma Sprayed Coatings

100%

The wear behavior and the mechanism of plasma sprayed WC12Co, Cr_{2}O_{3} and Al_{2}O_{3} coatings in sliding contact with steel bronze and carbon graphite were studied with block-on-ring arrangement. The coefficient of friction and wear rate of these coatings were measured at dry friction conditions. The worn surfaces of the coatings were examined employing the scanning electron microscope. The results obtained that the wear mechanism of coatings changes for different kinds of layers.

The low power reactor for microwave chemical vapor deposition process is described. The rotating Mo holder of 12 mm diameter and 6 mm height with the diamond substrate was heated by 2.45 GHz microwaves to temperature about 800°C in the range of (1.5-7)% CH_{4}/H_{2} mixture to create plasma at pressure 70 Tr. Stabilization of the holder temperature was performed by optical observation of radiation from the holder followed by adjusting of the magnetron power. Diamond detectors are produced using microwave chemical vapor deposition process grown on single crystal diamond high pressure high temperature Sumimoto substrates, [100] oriented. The response of diamond detectors for X-rays has been measured in the current mode using medical X-rays tube. The linear response of the diamond detector current versus X-ray tube current (dose) is presented.

Since 1990s the process of exclusion of gas-discharge and vacuum switches (GDSs and VSs) from pulsed power systems has been conditioned by two major factors - insufficient service time and necessity to supply filament circuits of GDSs and VSs. In the report, design and long-term test results of pseudospark switches (PSSs) are presented. The PSSs are to a great extent free of the mentioned shortcomings; in particular, the switches are capable of operating without filament, providing a wide variety of perspective applications of the tubes in pulsed power.

The area of microbial inactivation by the low-temperature plasma produced by DC electric cometary discharge is increased by insertion of an electrically insulated metallic grid between the discharge and the target object. Gram-negative bacteria are almost fully inactivated; an additional zone of incomplete inactivation appears for Gram-positive bacteria and yeasts.
