Summary The paper rises some questions regarding the necessity of changes in the traditional faunistics. The obtained results prove that national parks play a substantial role in preserving the biological diversity of soil fauna. National parks occupy a small part of the country, however, they protect on their area nearly 70% of uropodid mites recorded in Poland. Since the rate of examination of individual parks is insufficient, this percentage is probably higher.
