Programmed cell death (PCD) is a complicated phenomenon which can be characterized with a large variety of the course. It is one of the basic processes responsible for accurate functioning of plant organism. PCD appears frequently in many stages of ontogenesis, embryogenesis, histogenesis and senescence. PCD is also an important element of plants defense against attack of pathogenic microorganism. Although the knowledge about PCD in plant cells has considerably broaden in the last decade, there are still many questions to be answered. The main purpose of this paper is an attempt to systematize reports about PCD in plant cell in relation to morphology of its course.
