Silver has been known from their bactericidal property since the ancient time. Silver preparations in medicine were used for treatment of burns, as bandage for trauma and diabetic wounds, as silver-coated catheters, and in medical devices. This metal has been shown able to kill over 650 disease-causing bacteria, viruses, fungi and parasites. Silver is toxic to pathogen cells because it interferes with metabolic enzymes and DNA replication. The broad usage of silver is due both to its high bactericidal activity and low toxicity to the human organism.
