Badania na Surtsey wnoszą istotny wkład w poznanie procesu kolonizacji lądu przez organizmy żywe oraz przebiegu procesów sukcesji pierwotnej. W artykule omówiono te zagadnienia, poszerzając je także o podstawowe dane dotyczące topografii wyspy, jej historii, budowy geologicznej i klimatu. Przedstawiono przebieg procesów kolonizacji i sukcesji pierwotnej na Surtsey od roku 1967 oraz podsumowano wyniki większości prac badawczych poświęconych tej wyspie.

Research carried out on Surtsey Island since 1967 contributed greatly to the knowledge on its colonization by living organisms and processes of primary succession. Both processes are described and supplemented with information on the origin, geology, topography and climate of Surtsey.
