Excess boron in soil is often found in dry agricultural areas and is one of the factors limiting crop yields. Polysaccharide-based biostimulants can mitigate the harmful effects of environmental stresses on plants. I performed this study under controlled greenhouse conditions to understand the response of pepper plants under boron stress to treatment with water-soluble chitosan (WSC). I watered plants with 50 or 100 mg/l WSC and 1.5 mM boric acid solution. As a result of WSC application at both concentrations, plants were taller and had more leaves and greater leaf length, width, relative chlorophyll content, and fresh aboveground weight compared with the control. Plants exposed to boron stress had fewer leaves, a lower relative chlorophyll content, and leaf blade damage indicative of boron toxicity. At the same time, boron-exposed plants showed a marked increase in the leaf nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, and boron contents. Applying WSC at both concentrations modulated boron stress in plants by improving plant growth; reducing boron accumulation in leaves; and increasing the available nitrate nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium contents in the substrate.

The response of cut Amaranthus tricolor foliage to continuous treatment with 200 mg·l-1 8-hydroxyquinoline citrate (8-HQC) or 2, 4 and 6% ethanol was investigated. Application of ethanol and HQC enhanced the vase-life and final fresh weight. The best quality cut Amaranthus tricolor foliage were obtained when the stems held in 4% ethanol. These are the first published results that indicate that ethanol positively improved the postharvest quality of cut Amaranthus tricolor foliage.

Plants of the genus Lycoris in Japan are of importance in culture and religion; they are used as ornamental and medicinal plants. Two species are particularly attractive: Lycoris aurea with yellow flowers and Lycoris radiata with red flowers. Both species show a wide biological activity mainly due to the high content of alkaloids. The aim of the study was to compare the mineral composition of Lycoris aurea and Lycoris radiata bulbs. The analyses were carried out on bulbs obtained after the end of flowering. There were significant differences between the tested species in the content of both macronutrients and micronutrients. The bulbs of Lycoris radiata contained significantly more nitrogen, potassium, magnesium, zinc, manganese and iron compared to Lycoris aurea bulbs. In turn, more boron was found in Lycoris aurea bulbs. There were no differences between species in terms of phosphorus, calcium and copper contents in the bulbs. In summary, both species have different nutritional requirements. Lycoris aurea bulbs have the highest nitrogen and magnesium content, while Lycoris radiata bulbs contain the highest amounts of nitrogen and potassium. Bulbs of both species are a rich source of iron and zinc.

The article presents a list of ornamental and useful plants cultivated on Huahine Island in French Polynesia. These are flowering plants with unique visual and fragrance features, such as: Frangipani Tree, Tiare Tahiti, Gardienia, Bougainvillea, Hibiscus Tree, Blue Water Lily, Ti Plant, Ylang Ylang, Madagascar Rosy Periwinkle, Orchid. These plants belong to the traditional and cultural characteristics of Huahine Island, as in the entire French Polynesia.

The Orchidacea are one of the largest families of flowering ornamental plants in the Pacific region, especially in the tropics. Among this group plants, attention should be paid to the intergeneric hybrid Mokara. The following 10 cultivars of the Mokara hybrid were used in the experiment: ‘Bloonlong’, ‘Calipso’, Chak Kuan’, ‘Chorcharood’, ‘Jenistar’, ‘Kitti’, ‘Pranee’, ‘Robin’, ‘Tammy’ and ‘Tangerine’. The tested Mokara cultivars are distinguished by a wide palette of warm colors, including many shades of orange and red. These are very rare colors among other popular genera of orchids.

Mokara is one of the widely cultivated orchid in the Pacific region, especially in the tropics. In this study we evaluated the longevity of inflorescences and flowers 10 Mokara cultivars: ‘Bloonlong’, ‘Calipso’, Chak Kuan’, ‘Chorcharood’, ‘Jenistar’, ‘Kitti’, ‘Pranee’, ‘Robin’, ‘Tammy’ and ‘Tangerine’. Cultivar ‘Kitti’ inflorescences were characterized by excellent vase life for more than three weeks. The highest longevity had the flowers of ‘Bloonlong’, ’Kitti’ and ‘Robin’. Spraying flowers of Mokara orchids with the OASIS® Clear Life preparation increased their quality depending on the cultivar.
