The aim of this work is to examine the environmental dependence of stellar velocity dispersion in local galaxies. In studies that likely suffer from the radial selection effect, one has a preference for the use of volumelimited samples. Two volume-limited samples with different redshift and luminosity ranges were constructed from the Main galaxy data of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey Data Release 10 (SDSS DR10). Considering some drawbacks of volume-limited samples, the apparent magnitude-limited Main galaxy sample was also applied. Statistical analyses in these different galaxy samples can reach the same conclusion: galaxies with large stellar velocity dispersions exist preferentially in high density regimes, while galaxies with small stellar velocity dispersions are located preferentially in low density regions, which is inconsistent with that obtained at intermediate redshifts.

This article presents a profile of Jurgen Rost against a background of German psychology’s development. Jurgen Rost graduated from Christian-Albrechts University in 1976 and in 1980, after additional studies in mathematics he received PhD diploma. His scientific achievements include over 120 titles on very diverse subjects addressed to specialists, students, teachers and policy-makers. Some part of his works concerns methodology and efficiency of teaching in natural sciences and another part refers to statistics and methodology, e.g. to latent variables. Rost is also one of the scientists who tried to find a way to invalidate surface contradiction of quantitative and qualitative.

The goal of this study was to establish technical and tactical performance goals for elite male volleyball players (Spanish first division). This paper is the result of scientific collaboration between volleyball coaches and researchers. The process of establishing the goals and the reference values of the performance goals was: 1) conceptual analysis, establishing the criteria for the analysis of players’ and teams’ performance (researchers and coaches); 2) mathematical analysis, data collection and data analysis of the possible performance goals; and 3) practical analysis, establishing the performance goals according to their usefulness and applicability following the SMART principle. Seven performance goals were established to evaluate the technical-tactical actions of the players in training and in competition. Protocols utilized can be used as references of how to calculate the technical and tactical performance goals in sport.

A general dependence of the enzyme catalytic rate on its mass was revealed when a statistical analysis of 17065 records from the EMP database was performed. The estimated activation energy of the catalytic process decreases asymptotically with the enzyme molecular mass increase. The proposed theoretical model postulates the existence of an intermediate complex of the enzyme and the departing product. It allows for the explanation of the discovered mass-energy relationship, as an effect of the global enzyme-product interactions during complex dissociation. Fitted parameters of the model seem to be in agreement with those widely accepted for the van der Waals energy of molecular interactions. Their values also agree with the picture of the hydrogen bonding in the catalytic process and suggest that surface walk can be the favorable way of the product departure.

The International Basketball Federation (FIBA) recently introduced major rule changes that came into effect with the 2010/11 season. Most notably, moving the three-point arc and changing the shot-clock. The purpose of this study was to investigate and quantify how these changes affect the game performance of top-level European basketball players. In order to better understand these changes, we also investigated past seasons and showed the presence of several trends, even in the absence of significant rule changes. A large set of game statistics for 10 seasons and 2198 Euroleague basketball games in which top European clubs competed was analyzed. Results show that the effects of the rule changes are contrary to trends in recent years
