This article makes a brief review of the most important results obtained by the authors and their collaborators during the last four years in the field of the development of metal-insulator-silicon structures with dielectric film containing silicon nanocrystals, which are suitable for applications in radiation dosimetry. The preparation of SiOx films is briefly discussed and the annealing conditions used for the growth of silicon nanocrystals are presented. A two-step annealing process for preparation of metal-oxide-semiconductor structures with three-layer gate dielectrics is described. Electron Microscopy investigations prove the Si nanocrystals growth, reveal the crystal spatial distribution in the gate dielectric and provide evidences for the formation of a top SiO2 layerwhen applying the two-step annealing. Two types of MOS structures with three region gate dielectricswere fabricated and characterized by high frequency capacitance/conductancevoltage (C/G-V) measurements. The effect of gamma and ultraviolet radiation on the flatband voltage of preliminary charged metal-oxide-semiconductor structures is investigated and discussed.

Taurine/EPR rods (3 × 10 mm) have been prepared by a simple technique in the laboratory where taurine powder was mixed with a molten mixture of paraffin wax and an ethylene vinyl acetate (EVA) copolymer. The binding mixture EVA/Paraffin does not present interference or noise in the EPR signal before or after irradiation. The rods show good mechanical properties for safe and multi-use handling. An EPR investigation of radiation induced radicals in taurine rods revealed that there are two types of radicals produced after exposure to gamma radiation (60Co). EPR spectra were recorded and analyzed - also the microwave power saturation and modulation amplitude were studied and optimized. Response of taurine to different radiation doses (1.5-100 kGy) was studied and found to follow a linear relationship up to 100 kGy. Radiation induced radicals in taurine persists and showed a noticeable stability over 94 days following irradiation. Uncertainities associated with the evaluation of radiation doses using taurine dosimeters were discussed and tabulated. It was found that taurine possesses good dosimetric properties using EPR spectroscopy in high doses in addition to its simple spectrum.

ICRU) definiującą wielkości operacyjne H*(10) i Q*(10).

The paper presents a method for determination of ambient quality factor for fast neutrons, Qn*(10), in mixed radiation fields with unknown neutron energy spectrum of limited energy range. The method uses a correlation between the Qn*(10) values, calculated by Monte-Carlo method for monoenergetic neutrons, with parameters of saturation curves of the recombination chamber, determined experimentally in the fields of monoenergetic neutrons and accompanying gamma radiation. In such a way, a number of discrepancies can be omitted, among them those associated with limited conformity between radiation quality factor and parameters of initial recombination of ions, as well as between construction of the recombination chamber and ICRU sphere, for which the quantities H*(10) and Q*(10) were defined.
