Introduction: The aim of the study was to analyze the risk factors for oral cavity and pharyngeal cancer in people examined under the Head and Neck Cancer Prophylaxis Program. Material and methods: The study was conducted in a total of 300 patients, including 186 women and 114 men, as part of the Head and Neck Cancer Prevention Program in 2014–2018. Before the laryngological examination, the patients completed a demographic and medical questionnaire regarding the risk factors of head and neck cancer, including education, reported disease symptoms, smoking addiction, number of cigarettes smoked daily, alcohol consumption, frequency of visits in a dental office, oral hygiene measures, number of sexual partners, oral sex, family medical history of head and neck cancer. Results: The subjects reported the following symptoms: hoarseness 43.33%, difficulty swallowing 21.33%, pain or mouth burning 20.33% and other symptoms were observed in 46.33%. The main dental symptoms were: bleeding from the gums during teeth brushing in 48.89%, dry mouth 45.56%. Currently 20.33% of respondents smoke, whereas 54% of patients smoked in the past. In the analyzed material, the majority (80%) consumed alcoholic beverages. 27.67% of respondents admitted having oral sex, including 24.73% of women and 32.46% of men. After performing the extended diagnostics, the tumor was found in 10% of the subjects. C onclusions: Statistical significance of differences was found: between hoarseness and alcohol consumption, both in women and in men, between hoarseness and smoking in women, between difficulty in swallowing and smoking in women, between burning/pain in the mouth and smoking in men, between hoarseness and the cultivation of oral sex in men, between the difficulty of swallowing and the practice of oral sex in the studied men and between burning/pain in the oral cavity and the occurrence of malignancy.

Besides their structural catalytic and diverse regulatory functions, proteins are also precursors of many important biological compounds essential for normal functioning of humans. Many of these compounds may be used as markers for identification of specific pathological states. A comprehensive knowledge about the metabolism of salivary proteins and the mechanisms of action of their metabolites allowed the development of effective treatment for many disorders. However, it should not be forgotten that in some pathological conditions, these compounds not only could be involved in the pathogenesis but also could be used as tool in the prediction of many diseases. This paper is a review of the published literature on selected salivary proteins in the context of the physiological processes of the human body and chosen chronic disorders, such as diabetes, diabetic nephropathy, mucositis, oral mycoses and caries.

The aim of the study was to identify a group of patients at high risk of methicillin resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) infection following surgical procedures involving oral cavity, head and neck.Material and methods. A retrospective analysis of demographic, clinical and laboratory data was performed. A manual search of laboratory records for a five years period (2005-2009) was performed for specimens submitted to the diagnostic microbiology laboratory from patients admitted to the Cranio-Maxillofacial and Oncologic Surgery Department.Results. Methicillin resistant Staphylococcus aureus was identified in 26 cases. Most commonly it was isolated from tongue swabs in patients following extensive oncological surgical procedures involving oral cavity. Most common risk factors were: age above 65 years, neoplasms, multisite trauma with loss of consciousness, cigarette smoking, alcohol abuse, tobacco addiction, antibiotic therapy immediately before hospitalization. More than half of patients with MRSA infection required surgical treatment except for pharmacological treatment.Conclusions. Monitoring of postoperative wounds is of great importance with regard to he risk of MRSA infection.

Material and methods. In Lodz, 21st September 2016, under the Head and Neck Cancer Awareness Week, 106 people, including 67 women aged 29–77 and 39 men aged 23–84, underwent preventive examinations in the hospital department. Prior to the laryngological examination, the patients were asked to answer questions that referred to their education, medical case history, symptoms, smoking habits with the number of cigarettes per day, alcohol intake, the number of lifetime sexual partners, oral sex engagement, incidents of head and neck cancer in the family history. Results: The major part of the examined patients were women and men with the secondary and high level of education, 47,76% and 35,82%, and 58,97% and 35,91% respectively. The patients were informed by mass media about the planned preventive medical examinations – 80,60% women and 79,49% men. The most common symptoms reported by women were: hoarse voice in 61,19% cases, dysphagia in 32,84% cases and burning sensation and/or pain in the oral cavity in 29,85% cases. The examined male patients mainly showed hoarse voice (46,15%), other symptoms (43,59%) and dysphagia (25,64%). 28,35% women and 28,20% men smoked cigarettes, while passive smokers were 22,38% and 25,64% respectively. Alcohol consumption was reported by 67,16% women and 82,05% men, rather occasionally. Having oral sex was noted in 25,37% women and 38,46% men, mostly with multiple sexual partners. Among the studied patients, 13,43% women and 5,12% men suffered from malignant cancer, including 2,98% women and 2,56% men who reported head and neck carcinoma in the medical interview. On the basis of the interview and ENT examination, 11,94% women and 17,94% men were qualified for the extended oncological diagnostics. Conclussion. The Fourth Head and Neck Cancer Awareness Week shows the increased interest in preventive screening, especially oncological screening, and thus the necessity of such preventive activities in the future.

Approximately 555,000 new cases of head and neck cancer (HNC) are diagnosed annually worldwide. Moreover, second primary malignancy (SPM) occurs more commonly in the head and neck than in any other body region. A 67-year-old female patient was admitted to our Department for removal of an upper lip tumor. The patient underwent excision of the lip tumor under general anesthesia. Postoperative histopathology revealed a polymorphic, low-grade adenocarcinoma. Three weeks later, the patient was re-admitted to extend the margin of excision and perform lymphadenectomy. On physical examination, a second primary synchronous lesion was found on the left side of the hard palate. Lymphoscintigraphy was performed to determine the lymph node field and the sentinel lymph node. On ultrasonography, the lymph nodes were not enlarged. Extended excision of the upper lip was performed, and a 5-mm, hard palate tumor was removed with a margin of unchanged tissue. The patient was scheduled for adjuvant treatment. The criteria for a synchronous malignancy are as follows: both tumors must be malignant on histopathology, there must be a distance of at least 2 cm of unchanged mucosa between the index tumor and the primary tumor, the possibility that the second tumor is the metastasis of the index tumor needs to be excluded. In our patient, all these criteria were met. A thorough workup should include medical history, physical evaluation, and imaging, and it should be carried out on every step of treatment and during long-term follow-up in patients after cancer treatment. This is crucial, because not only is there a possibility of recurrence or metastases, but also a considerable percentage of patients may have a second primary lesion.

Fungi, mainly yeast-like fungi of the Candida genus, and especially the species Candida albicans, occupy an important place among microorganisms that colonize the oral cavity. The aim of the paper was to assess the susceptibility of different strains to some antifungal drugs. The study material consisted of swab samples taken from the buccal mucosa of 376 healthy individuals of both genders, from neonate to18 years. C. albicans strains were isolated in 79 persons. To evaluate drug resistance phenotypes of the isolated C. albicans strains FungitestTM (Bio-Rad) was used. The study showed that in different age groups the percentage of the tested C. albicans isolates susceptible to all the tested azole drugs varied from 76% to 95%. Drug resistant strains were found only in the eldest age group (4.8%). Phenotypic diversity (drug resistance types) of the studied isolates indicates a wide range of adaptation possibilities enabling colonization of various ecological niches in the oral cavity ecosystem. The presence of C. albicans strains intermediate or resistant to azole drugs among the tested isolates may be due to overuse of that drug group in general therapy and in the oral cavity treatment.

The aim of the date was to determine the sensitivity to chitosan ascorbate microaerophilic bacteria isolated from pathological pockets, root canals and apical abscesses. Chitosan was obtained from Antarctic krill. The experiments included 70 clinical isolates and 4 standards strains. The susceptibility of microaerophilic bacteria was performed by means of plate dilution technique in Brucella agar supplemented with 5% defibrinated sheep blood. Inoculum contained 105 CFU per spot. Incubation inoculated agar was performed at 37°C for 48 hrs in microaerophilic conditions. MIC was defined as the least concentrations of chitosan ascorbate that inhibited growth of tested bacteria. The results indicated that 47% of all date bacteria was susceptible to chitosan ascorbate in ranges ≤ 0.01 – 0.5 mg/ml. The most susceptible were the strains of Corynebacterium matruchotii (100%, MIC ≤ 0.01 – 0.5 mg/ml) and the least sensitive strains of Rothia dentocariosa (MIC in ranges 1.0 ˗ ≥ 4.0 mg/ml ).

In our research, we determine the effect of low-level laser irradiation with nanoparticles on Streptococcus salivarius. Photodynamic killing of periodontopathogenic bacteria may be an alternative to the systemic application of antibacterial drugs used in the treatment of periodontal diseases. The application of photosensitizing nanoparticles and their excitation by visible light of blue spectra enables effective killing of periodontopathogens. This data combined with the results demonstrates that TiO2, AgTiO2 and S/TiO2 can inhibit the proliferation of Streptococcus salivarius due to its high photocatalytic activity, which irreversibly damages the cell walls and membranes.

Inflammation of the periapical tissue may lead to the development of complications involving cooperation between many medical specialists. The cutaneous fistula is a rare complication of chronic alveolus inflammation being diagnostic and therapeutic challenge due to unspecific symptoms. The correct diagnostic protocol may influence correct diagnosis, localization of the primary site of inflammation and the appropriate treatment.
