Introduction: Every year in Poland spinal cord injury occurs in about 800 people. They have to learn to live in a completely new world suited to the skills and abilities of healthy people. The aim of the research was to find out how the adaptation to self-disability among people with paraplegia proceeds in relation to its duration. Material and methods: 40 people with spinal cord injury took part in the research. They were divided into two groups according to the duration of their disability: up to two years of disability and from five years on. In the research the “Psycho-social adaptation” anamnesis created by the author of this paper was used. Its questions covered four categories: Attitude towards self-disability; Interpersonal relations; Work and recreation; Plans, desires, dreams. Results: Persons with a shorter course of paraplegia more often emphasized the negative sides of their disability: barriers, their own defects and restraints. On the other hand, persons with a longer course of paraplegia were aware of their limitations, but they were also able to point out a lot of positive sides of their disability. Conclusion: The research has confirmed the fact that a longer period of disability leads to better adaptation to it, but further analyses with a larger group of the examined is necessary. It must also be taken into consideration that the course of time is just one of many factors positively affecting the adaptation process.

Introduction: The need for care services is a result of population ageing, especially as life expectancy is expected to rise, due to progress of medicine. The bigger the number of elderly with dementia, illness, and disability, the more the rest of society is involved in care activities. The family serves to supplement the health care system’s financial and organisational gaps, especially in the situation of its failure. Aim: Recognise the causes of the subjectively perceived burden of caregivers who take care of physically disabled dependents. Materials and methods: The study involved 38 caregivers and the physically disabled dependents they cared for. The group of caregivers consisted of 31 women (82%) and 7 men (18%), with an average age of 55.9 years. In the group of physically disabled dependents consisted of 16 women (42%) and 22 men (58%), with a mean age of 67.5 years. Used in the study were: a demographic questionnaire, Barthel Index and the Lawton IADL scale to assess the care recipients’ state, and the Cope Index to assess the positive and negative influence of caregiving on the caregivers. Results: Studies have shown a significant correlation between subjective caregiver burden and: care recipient’s BMI, self-perceived caregivers’ health, number of hours per week devoted to care, caregiver satisfaction, and quality of support received by the caregiver. Conclusions: Interventions to support caregivers of people with disabilities should take into consideration the impact of care on both the physical and psychological state of the caregiver. Proper identification of the needs of caregivers will provide them with the necessary support, help to increase their satisfaction with the role, and protect them from burnout.

72%
EN
At the Paralympic Games in 2016 paracanoeing will be recognized as a Paralympic discipline. As this competitive sport discipline has just recently been introduced among disabled people this study attempts to present basic rules of this disciplines well as its classification and division into sport categories. The division of paracanoers according to gender, boat type - K-1 (single kayak), K-2 (double kayak), V-1 (single canoe), V-2 (double canoe) - is also described, as well as the system of classification according to the type of disability (in this system three groups are identified: LTA - functional legs, trunk and arms, TA - trunk and arms, A - arms). The study also outlines the process of categorizing competitors into different sport classes which is further divided into functional and medical classification. The study provides a review of literature on canoeing for disabled people and information provided by the International Canoe Federation (ICF) for the provisions of the sport and competitors classification. In the study practical tips on how to adapt equipment to the needs of paracanoers will also be provided. One can assume that in the near future due to its inclusion in the Paralympic Games the interest in canoeing will grow among disabled people who enjoy being active, whereas development of equipment and methods of its adaptation will make this sport discipline available to anyone interested.
