Degree of deacetylation (DD) is one of the main parameters characterizing chitosan. The most precise measurements of DD require sophisticated equipment (NMR spectrometer), not available at many laboratories worldwide working on chitosan. There is a need for low-cost, simple, yet sturdy and reliable methods and procedures for DD determination. The aim of this work was to test and compare – on the same set of chitosan samples - a few of the existing analytical techniques and provide recommendation for selecting DD determination methods. Tests were performed on four chitosans of nominal DD in the range 70 - 95%. Three different methods of titration, two different methods of spectroscopy UV / Vis and infrared spectroscopy using various calculation approaches were used. The results are summarized and compared with values obtained by 1H NMR, considered as the reference method. Moreover, evaluation of the ease of performance and availability of reagents in the given methods was performed. On that basis, recommendations for selection of DD determination methods were formulated.

Background: Healthy eating, especially fruit and vegetable consumption, is a major contributor to the prevention of chronic non-communicable diseases. The multiple benefits of healthy food and nutrition in childhood and adolescence reinforce the need for studies encouraging young people to healthy nutrition. The present review increases understanding of what methods (interventions) should be performed to encourage healthy eating in children and adolescents. Material/Methods: A scientific literature review of Medline (Pubmed) database was performed, a total of 615 publications were found. Of these, only 15 papers were selected for the analysis. Results: The multi-component interventions (encouraging of fruit and vegetable consumption was usually combined with physical activity promotion and overweight/obesity control, n=8) could be considered as effective in encouraging healthy nutrition. Findings showed that programs and empowering policies at schools based on scientific evidence can increase consumption of fruit and vegetables among children and adolescents and promote healthier lifestyle as significant changes in healthy eating after intervention were identified in two thirds of projects. Barriers and limitations such as possible difficulties of implementation, duration and density of intervention, however, must be considered and prevented prior to interventions when it is possible because multi-component strategies may not lead to positive eating behaviour changes as intended. Moreover, single strategies such as fruit and vegetable campaigns also appeared to have positive effects on healthy foods consumption by children. Conclusions: The multi-component interventions (combinations of methods to encourage fruit and vegetable consumption, physical activity and overweight or obesity control) can be considered as effective in healthy eating promotion of children and adolescents. However, barriers and limitations (difficulties in implementation, duration and density of an intervention) should be prevented prior the interventions

Introduction: Society on Scoliosis Orthopaedic and Rehabilitation Treatment (SOSORT) is an international organization which determines standards for scoliosis treatment and research. Physiotherapy is a necessary part of treatment standards. SOSORT indicates which conditions must be fulfilled by physiotherapy methods in order to be used for scoliosis treatment. One of the concepts used worldwide in the process of scoliosis conservative treatment is Proprioceptive Neuromuscular Facilitation (PNF). International PNF Association (IPNFA) establishes the PNF teaching standards, application and related research. Aim: The goal of this work is to demonstrate conformity PNF method to SOSORT guidelines for conservative treatment of people with scoliosis. Material and methods: SOSORT recommendations set in 2005-2012 were used to analyze knowledge and information, according to the newest IPNFA agreements. Results: Conformity PNF method to SOSORT guidelines can be observed in: personal treatment planning; focus on treatment goals (stopping the progression of curvature, breathing function improvement, reduction in pain, aesthetic issues), possibility of special effects on the spine deformity (autocorrection of the spine and pelvis in three planes, stabilization of the posture, activities of the daily living and general health education). The positive influence of the selected PNF patterns on postural parameters of individuals with scoliosis was observed in the initial studies. Conclusions: Described in details structure of PNF method can be used in the planning of research. It is necessary to conduct research to demonstrate the effectiveness of PNF method in the treatment of people with scoliosis.

W latach 90.

Since 1990s we have observed intense progress in studies on animal personality, especially on birds treated as a model. Up to date many indicators of personality have been described for different species, among which usually there were analysed: manner of environment exploration, singing, aggression level, and also some morphological indicators, e.g. plumage. Still, researchers are facing many problems such as effect of context. There are also attempts to find relationship between personality and sexual selection, or breeding success. Aim of this article is to show the state of art in birds' personality studies, and directions for future research.
