Iron reach tektite represented by indochinite was examined by using EMP and XRD after 120 min long heating in oxide atmosphere at 1100°C. The electron microprobe analyses as well as BSE images reveal loss of iron in tektite bulk composition. Iron as a element was incorporated into a new, probable mineral phase that is mostly present on the surface of the indochinite. Size and textural relation of the Fe-rich phase does not permit to analize it. XRD data does not reveal presence of any mineral rich in Fe including metallic iron.

Tri(8-quinolinolato)iron complex immobilized onto SBA-15 catalyst has been synthesized through a stepwise procedure. The characterization results indicated that the BET surface area, total pore volume and average pore width decrease after stepwise modification of SBA-15, while the structure keeps intact. Catalytic tests showed that FeQ3-SBA-15 catalyzes the oxidation reaction well with 34.8% conversion of benzyl alcohol and 74.7% selectivity to benzaldehyde when water is used as the solvent after 1 h reaction. In addition, homogeneous catalyst tri(8-quinolinolato)iron exhibits very bad catalytic behavior using water as the solvent.

INTRODUCTION The activity of antioxidant system enzymes in human semen might be age dependent, thus the quality of it may get worse. The aim of this study was to investigate the correlation between the age, catalase activity and iron concentration in seminal plasma and the influence of these factors on the quality of semen. MATERIALS AND METHODS Normospermic semen samples were obtained from 63 men (range, 22–37 years) and divided in two age groups: under 33 (group I) and over 33 years old (group II). The semen parameters, catalase activity and iron concentration were determined in seminal plasma. RESULTS We observed that in group II the iron concentration in seminal plasma increased but sperm motility (especially linear progressive motility) dropped with age. A lower semen volume showed a significant increase in catalase activity as well as iron concentration. Increasing catalase activity showed a significant positive relationship with better sperm quality. We found positive correlations between catalase activity and iron concentration. CONCLUSION Catalase has a protective effect on sperm cell membranes. Iron concentration in seminal plasma rises in an age dependent manner which may contribute to sperm cells damage.

Wykonano badanie morfologiczne nasienia, oznaczono aktywność katalazy i stężenie żelaza w plazmie nasiennej. Wykazano ponadto dodatnią korelację pomiędzy aktywnością katalazy a stężeniem żelaza. WNIOSKI Katalaza wykazuje działanie ochronne na błonę komórkową plemników. Stężenie żelaza w plazmie nasienia wzrasta u mężczyzn wraz z wiekiem, co może przyczyniać się do uszkodzenia plemników.

The paper presents the results of the research on the degree of the recovery of vanadium(V) from the used vanadium catalyst with the use of KOH solution. The extraction was performed at 293 - 323 K, for 0.5 to 4 h and the catalysts of the variable grain diameter. The concentration of the extracting solution was varied in the range 5 - 20%. The optimal ratio of solid to liquid phase S/L was determined. Additionally the degree of the recovery of total iron ions was presented.

The aim of the present study was to investigate the association of age related macular degeneration (AMD) risk with some aspects of iron homeostasis: iron concentration in serum, level of soluble transferrin receptor (sTfR), and transferrin receptor (TFRC) genetic variability. Four hundred and ninety one AMD patients and 171 controls were enrolled in the study. Restriction fragment length polymorphism PCR was employed to genotype polymorphisms of the TFRC gene, and colorimetric assays were used to determine the level of iron and sTfR. Multiple logistic regression was applied for all genotype/allele-related analyses and the ANOVA test for iron and sTfR serum level comparison. We found that the genotypes and alleles of the c.-253G > A polymorphism of the TFRC gene were associated with AMD risk and this association was modulated by smoking status, AMD family history, living environment (rural/urban), body mass index and age. The levels of sTfR was higher in AMD patients than controls, whereas concentrations of iron did not differ in these two groups. No association was found between AMD occurrence and the p.Gly142Ser polymorphism of the TRFC gene. The results obtained suggest that transferrin receptor and variability of its gene may influence AMD risk.

Considering the nutritional values, breadstuff plays a big part in covering human nourishment needs and constitutes a base of all day diet. Moreover, bread is an excellent source of numerous vitamins and minerals the abundance of which depends on the degree of grinding. Thus, it seems to be very important to know the composition and level of bio-elements. That is why the main target of this study was to evaluate the concentration of selected trace elements: chromium (Cr), nickel (Ni), iron (Fe) and manganese (Mn) in wheat grain, wheat bran, different wheat and rye flour types and variety of breadstuff also with addition of grains and seeds from different bakeries and mills. Another task was to analyze if the technological process has an influence on secondary despoil of bread goods with heavy metal elements. The analyzed trace elements were measured with a precise and accurate atomic absorption spectrophotometric method (AAS) and the results were expressed in mg/kg of selected sample. Obtained results show that bread and grain products are a good source of trace elements like chromium, nickel, iron and manganese. However, the higher levels of chromium and nickel in bread goods could rather be an effect of impurity caused by a technological process in mill and bakeries.

Objective of the study was to test dietary supplements available on the European market with regard to their iron content. Twenty-nine vitamin and mineral supplements were investigated, with additional assessment of their mass homogeneity. Iron was determined by means of the AAS1 method following microwave mineralization of particular samples. Findings were compared to iron contents declared by producers. Tested supplements were analysed with regard to the ratio between the amount of iron supplied to the body and the RDA2 for adults and pregnant women, as well as in view of the number of preparation pieces required to be taken in in order to ensure the RDA in the groups included in the research. All preparations were characterised by high mass homogeneity. The iron content determined in the supplements was different from the values indicated by the producers on the packages. Four supplements did not meet the European requirements concerning acceptable limits of nutrient tolerance stated on the labels. Tolerance for iron value in food supplements indicated by producers on packages varied from RDAs for the studied groups. The dosage recommended by the producer was mostly different from the dosage necessary to meet the requirements for iron RDA in the studied groups.

We examined the response to hydrogen peroxide of two L5178Y (LY) sublines which are inversely cross-sensitive to hydrogen peroxide and X-rays: LY-R cells are radioresistant and hydrogen peroxide-sensitive, whereas LY-S cells are radiosensitive and hydrogen peroxide-resistant. Higher initial DNA breaks and higher iron content (potentially active in the Fenton reaction) were found in the hydrogen peroxide sensitive LY-R cells than in the hydrogen peroxide resistant LY-S cells, whereas the antioxidant defence of LY-R cells was weaker. In particular, catalase activity is twofold higher in LY-S than in LY-R cells. The content of monobromobimane-reactive thiols is 54% higher in LY-S than in LY-R cells. In contrast, the activity of glutathione peroxidase (GPx) is about two times higher in LY-R than in LY-S cells; however, upon induction with selenium the activity increases 15.6-fold in LY-R cells and 50.3-fold in LY-S cells. Altogether, the sensitivity difference is related to the iron content, the amount of the initial DNA damage, as well as to the efficiency of the antioxidant defence system. Differential nuclear translocation of p65-NF-κB in LY sublines is due to the more efficient antioxidant defence in LY-S than in LY-R cells.

The results of the leaching of vanadium(V) from the mixture after potassium metavanadate synthesis from KCl and spent vanadium catalyst in the presence of steam were presented. Spent vanadium catalyst was obtained from the waste storage of a chemical plant producing sulfuric acid(VI) by the contact method. The reaction mixture was leached using different solutions: 1 M Na2CO3, 20% CO(NH2)2, 15% NaOH, 15% KOH, 2 M H2SO4. The effect of time and temperature was studied. The results showed that for reaction mixture leached for 4 h at 303 K in the presence of 15% sodium hydroxide solution at a liquid:solid ratio of 10:1, the extent of leaching of vanadium(V) was 95.43%.

Facing the still growing demand for metals, particularly for zinc, the recovery of metals from secondary sources should be considered. Spent pickling solutions can be the source of valuable products such as hydrochloric acid, zinc or iron salts or even metallic zinc. The selection of an efficient, selective and economical method for the regeneration of such solutions is a key issue for hot dip galvanizing plants, especially in reference to strict environmental protection regulations.

Deoxyribose test has been widely used for determination of reactivities of various compounds for the hydroxyl radical. The test is based on the formation of hydroxyl radical by Fe2+ complex in the Fenton reaction. We propose a modification of the deoxyribose test to detect strong iron binding, inhibiting participation of Fe2+ in the Fenton reaction, on the basis of examination of concentration dependence of deoxyribose degradation on Fe2+ concentration, at a constant concentration of a chelating agent.
