The aim of this research was to develop a path-flow analysis model to highlight the relationships between buoyancy and prone gliding tests and some selected anthropometrical and biomechanical variables. Thirty-eight young male swimmers (12.97 ± 1.05 years old) with several competitive levels were evaluated. It were assessed the body mass, height, fat mass, body surface area, vertical buoyancy, prone gliding after wall push-off, stroke length, stroke frequency and velocity after a maximal 25 [m] swim. The confirmatory model included the body mass, height, fat mass, prone gliding test, stroke length, stroke frequency and velocity. All theoretical paths were verified except for the vertical buoyancy test that did not present any relationship with anthropometrical and biomechanical variables nor with the prone gliding test. The good-of-fit from the confirmatory path-flow model, assessed with the standardized root mean square residuals (SRMR), is considered as being close to the cut-off value, but even so not suitable of the theory (SRMR = 0.11). As a conclusion, vertical buoyancy and prone gliding tests are not the best techniques to assess the swimmer's hydrostatic and hydrodynamic profile, respectively.

The purpose of this study was to design, validate, and test the reliability of an instrument to evaluate knowledge of nutrition, weight control and its risk. The instrument collects information regarding: socio-demographics and athletic status; basic knowledge of nutrition (the diet they follow, nutrients, supplements, energy balance, myths, hydration and habits); and weight control and risks (weight control, eating behaviors, and weight control habits). The design, validation, and testing of the reliability of the questionnaire were done in four phases: a) design and development of the instrument, b) content validation, c) instrument reliability, and d) concurrent validity. The results show that the instrument is suitable for measuring nutrition, weight control and risk knowledge in athletes. The instrument that was developed and validated in this paper can contribute to assessing how the athletes evolve through their different formation stages.

The purpose of this paper was to study the ranges in height, weight, age, spike reach, and block reach of volleyball players in relation to the player position and the level of their respective teams in peak performance. The analysed sample included 1454 male and 1452 female players who participated in the volleyball competitions of the Olympic Games and World Championships in the 2000-2012 period. A descriptive, correlational, and longitudinal design was used. The variables studied were: the player position, body height, weight, body mass index, spike reach, block reach, age, and team level. The results show differences between body height, spike and block reaches, and the age of the players by their position. These differences are related to the needs of the different positions with regard to the actions they execute. Middle-blockers, outside-hitters, and opposites have the characteristics that are most suitable for blocking and spiking, and the setters and liberos appear to have characteristics conducive to setting and receiving as well as digging, respectively. The differences found in the studied variables with regard to the playing position are related to players' needs regarding the actions they perform. Player´s age was a variable that differentiated first teams at this level of competition for males, and physical capacities (body height, weight, spike reach, and block reach) were variables that differentiated first teams at this level of competition for females.

The most important issues in the administration of modern science is "editorial correctness" of scientific articles. Editors of the most prestigious scientific journals know how to build an impact factor. Is an overly rigorous procedure for submitted manuscripts appropriate in every case? The constant progress of science and the development of researchers is undeniable and remarkable. We dissociate ourselves from the principle of "publish a lot and quickly" recommended during the postdoctoral phase or other periods of a scientist's career. Quality requires time and humility towards that which was discovered and that which is still unknown.

Introduction There are some studies concern special field-based tests for wheelchair basketball players however, there were not a lot of studies confirmed reliability and/or validity of wheelchair basketball field-based tests. The aim of the present study was to assess test-retest reliability of the newly developed field-based tests focused on short time efforts with maximal intensity for wheelchair basketball players. Material and methods Nine elite male wheelchair basketball players (mean age 29.7 ± 5.9 years) performed two times 11 field-based tests focused on short time efforts with the maximal intensity: 3 m sprint, 5 m sprint, 10 m sprint, 20 m sprint, pass basketball ball by both hands from the chest, pass medicine ball (3 kg) by both hands from the chest, bilateral handgrip, 3-6-9 m drill test, 30-seconds sprint test, agility drill test, and 10x5 m sprint test. All sprint tests’ time were measured by Microgate® photocells (Bolzano, Italy). Differences between field-based tests repetitions were compared by the t-test for dependent samples, relationship between repetitions was calculated by the Pearson correlation coefficient, and the ICCs were calculated (test-retest reliability). Results The ICCs were ‘very good’, correlations were strong for each field-based test (r > 0.7). Only for the agility drill test the first repetition is statistically different compare to the second repetition (p = .015). Conclusions The main application of our research is a confirmation of reliability of 10 field-based tests related to short time efforts with maximum intensity: 3 m sprint, 5 m sprint, 10 m sprint, 20 m sprint, pass basketball ball by both hands from the chest, pass medicine ball (3 kg) by both hands from the chest, bilateral handgrip, 3-6-9 m drill test, 30-seconds sprint test, and 10x5 m sprint test.

There are different methods to reach hemostasis in the operative field. Recently the harmonic scalpel in surgery has been analyzed. The aim of the study was to compare the advantages in terms of operative time of thyroidectomies performed using the harmonic scalpel versus conventional suture ligation technique. Another aim of the study was to evaluate complications in both groups.Material and methods. From January 1, 2005, to December 31, 2006, 43 patients underwent subtotal thyroid resection using the harmonic scalpel for hemostasis (group 1). They were compared with a group of 46 patients who underwent conventional thyroidectomy with hemostasis achieved by following electrocoagulation and ligation (group 2). The study analyzed the duration of the procedure, considering the volume of the operated thyroid gland and extent of the thyroidectomy in both groups.Results. The duration of the thyroidectomies ranged between 30 and 160 minutes. The comparison in the mentioned groups showed that the harmonic scalpel shortened the duration of the procedure. An iterative procedure was applied with the step of 1 ml of the goiter volume, to check if this effect was present in whole volume range of the operated thyroid.Analysis in subgroups demonstrated that only in case of goiter size <50 ml the use of the harmonic scalpel clinically significant shortened the time of operation.Conclusions. The use of the harmonic scalpel shortened the time of thyroidectomy, as only in patients with the smaller goiter volume.

The high prevalence of depression globally and the severe burden of this life-threatening mental illness necessitate an evidence-based approach to its treatment, in order to offer best-possible relief to those suffering from it. The present bestpractice guideline was originally developed by a team of psychiatrists, psychologists, and other mental health professionals at a large psychiatric teaching hospital and outpatient clinic network in Michigan, USA. The document draws from several current major guidelines for the treatment of adult patients with depressive disorders published by national and international health organisations, such as the American Psychiatric Association (USA), Canadian Network for Mood and Anxiety Treatments (Canada), National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (UK) and World Health Organization (EU). The present document emphasizes the areas of broad consensus across these guidelines and, as such, the treatment recommendations contained herein represent the current “gold standard” in the field of psychiatry in the West. Part I of this two-part series covers a range of relevant psychiatric treatment aspects, from general patient management to treatment-stagespecific and population-specific recommendations. Special attention is given to pharmacotherapy, somatic therapies, treatment strategies for non-response and management of perinatal depression. Additional resources, including clinicianand patient-oriented websites and links to the full-text major published guidelines, where available, are provided. Psychiatric clinicians are encouraged to utilise the evidence-based practice recommendations for best-possible patient outcomes.

Dokument ten bazuje na aktualnych zaleceniach dotyczących leczenia dorosłych pacjentów z zaburzeniami depresyjnymi wydanych przez uznane krajowe i międzynarodowe instytucje zdrowotne, takie jak Amerykańskie Towarzystwo Psychiatryczne (American Psychiatric Association) (USA), Kanadyjska Sieć Leczenia Zaburzeń Nastroju iLękowych (Canadian Network for Mood and Anxiety Treatments) (Kanada), Narodowy Instytut Zdrowia iDoskonałości Klinicznej (National Institute for Health and Care Excellence) (UK) oraz Światowa Organizacja Zdrowia (World Health Organization) (UE).

In the present study, the reliability and validity of judging at the European championship in Berlin 2011 were analysed and the results were compared to a different level gymnastic competition - Universiade 2009 in Belgrade. For reliability and consistency assessment, mean absolute judge deviation from final execution score, Cronbach’s alpha coefficient, intra-class correlations (ICC) and Armor’s theta coefficient were calculated. For validity assessment mean deviations of judges’ scores, Kendall’s coefficient of concordance W and ANOVA eta-squared values were used. For Berlin 2011 in general Cronbach’s alpha was above 0.95, minima of item-total correlations were above 0.8, and the ICC of average scores and Armor’s theta were above 0.94. Comparison with Universiade 2009 identified vault and floor scores at both competitions to have inferior reliability indices. At both competitions average deviations of judges from the final E score were close to zero (p=0.84) but Berlin 2011 competition showed a higher number of apparatuses with significant Kendall’s W (5 vs. 2 for Universiade 2009) and higher eta-squared values indicating higher judge panel bias in all-round and apparatus finals. In conclusion, the quality of judging was comparable at examined gymnastics competitions of different levels. Further work must be done to analyse the inferior results at vault and floor apparatuses.

This study was conducted to determine the effect of warm-up on high-intensity front crawl tethered swimming and thus to better understand possible variations in the force exerted by the swimmers. Ten male national level swimmers (mean ± SD; age 15.3 ± 0.95 years old, height: 1.73 ± 5.2 m, body mass: 64.3 ± 7.8 kg, Fat mass 8.31 ± 3.1 kg) participated in this study. After a typical competition warm-up, the subjects performed a 30 s tethered swimming all-out effort in front crawl swimming technique. The same test was repeated in the day after but performed without warming up. Capillary blood lactate concentration was assessed before and after the swimming test and the Borg ratings of perceived exertion scale was used. Without a previous warm-up, the mean ± SD values of maximum and mean forces were 299.62 ± 77.56 N and 91.65 ± 14.70 N, respectively. These values were different (p<0.05) from the values obtained with warm-up (351.33 ± 81.85 N and 103.97 ± 19.11 N). Differences were also observed when regarding to the forces relative to body mass. However, the values of lactate net concentrations after the test performed with and without warm-up were not different (6.27 ± 2.36 mmol·l-1 and 6.18 ± 2.353 mmol·l-1) and the same occurs with the values of ratings of perceived exertion (15.90 ± 2.42 and 15.60 ± 2.27). These results suggest an improvement of the maximum and mean force of the swimmer on the tethered swimming due to previous warm-up.

Materiał i metody: Badaniami przekrojowymi w latach 2008-2009 objęto losowo dobraną grupę 150 studentek. Wiek badanych mieścił się w przedziale 20-27 lat. Odbitki stóp wykonano techniką niebrudzącą, przyrządem pomysłu ŚlęŜyńskiego. Z plantogramów uzyskano następujące wskaźniki oceniające wysklepienie podłużne: wskaźnik kątowy Clarke’a (CL), wskaźnik KY, wskaźnik Chippaux-Smirak (CSI), wskaźnik głębokości wysklepienia podłużnego stopy (Wgwp). Wyznaczono wskaźniki wysklepienia poprzecznego: wskaźnik Wwp Wejsfloga, kąt piętowy (γ). Wskaźniki proporcji stopy: wskaźnik tęgości stopy (Ts), wskaźnik długościowo-szerokościowy (Wd-sz). Weryfikacji trafności doboru wskaźników do oceny stóp dokonano metodą analizy czynnikowej. Analizy statystyczne przeprowadzono przy uŜyciu programu Microsoft Excel pakietu Office firmy Microsoft oraz programu STATISTICA 8.0 firmy StatSoft. Wyniki: Wskaźnik głębokości wysklepienia podłużnego stopy (Wgwp) osiągnął najwyższe wartości ładunków w ramach czynnika. Wskaźnik Wwp Wejsfloga osiągnął wyŜsze wartości ładunków czynnikowych niŜ kąt piętowy. Wskaźnik Wd-sz osiągnął wyŜsze wartości ładunków w ramach czynnika niż wskaźnik tęgości stopy (Ts). Wnioski: Do oceny wysklepienia podłużnego stóp najbardziej trafny w zastosowaniu jest wskaźnik głębokości wysklepienia podłużnego stopy (Wgwp). Do oceny wysklepienia poprzecznego najbardziej przydatny jest wskaźnik Wwp Wejsfloga, natomiast w ocenie proporcji stóp najbardziej trafny jest wskaźnik długościowo-szerokościowy (Wd-sz).

Background: The evaluation of correctness in feet shaping is significant from the point of view of the prevention and correction in foot deformation. Besides the ample works devoted to the diagnostic testing of feet, new research is necessary to standardize these evaluations as well as to determine the manner of foot deformation classification. The purpose of the work is an attempt to verify which of the suggested indexes will be more useful in evaluating the longitudinal arch of the foot, the transverse arch and foot proportion.Material and methods: Cross-sectional studies were performed in 2008-2009 and included 150 randomly selected students. The tested women were aged 20-27. A plantographic method non-marking technique was used to evaluate the feet. The longitudinal arch of the foot was evaluated by Clark’s angle (CL), KY index, Chippaux-Smirak Index (CSI) and the author’s index of depth of the longitudinal arch of the foot (IDLA). To evaluate the transverse arch of the foot the Wejsflog index (WI) and heel angle (γ) were used. Foot proportions were tested by using the following indexes: foot corpulence (FCI) and the length and width index (LWI). Verification of choice relevance of the plantographic indexes in relation to foot evaluation was carried out by factors analysis. Results: The index of depth of the longitudinal arch of the foot (IDLA) achieved the maximum load factor values. The Wejsflog index (WI) achieved slightly higher load factor values than did the heel angle. The length and width index (LWI) achieved slightly higher load factor values than did the foot corpulence index (FCI).Conclusions: In evaluating the longitudinal arch the most accurate is the index of the depth of the longitudinal arch (IDLA). To evaluate the transverse arch the Wejsflog index (WI) is more useful. To evaluate foot proportions the length and width index (LWI) is more useful.

Repeated sprint ability has been widely studied by researchers, however, analysis of the relationship between most kinetic variables and the effect of fatigue is still an ongoing process. To search for the best biomechanical parameter to evaluate repeated sprint ability, several kinetic variables were measured in a tethered field running test and compared regarding their sensitivity to fatigue and correlation with time trials in a free running condition. Nine male sprint runners (best average times: 100 m = 10.45 ± 0.07 s; 200 m = 21.36 ± 0.17 s; 400 m = 47.35 ± 1.09 s) completed two test sessions on a synthetic track. Each session consisted of six 35 m sprints interspersed by 10 s rest under tethered field running or free running conditions. Force, power, work, an impulse and a rate of force development were all directly measured using the sensors of a new tethered running apparatus, and a one-way ANOVA with Scheffé post-hoc test used to verify differences between sprints (p < 0.05). Pearson product-moment correlation measured the relationship between mechanical variables and free running performance. A total impulse, the rate of force development and maximum force did not show significant differences for most sprints. These three variables presented low to moderate correlations with free running performance (r between 0.01 and -0.35). Maximum and mean power presented the strongest correlations with free running performance (r = -0.71 and -0.76, respectively; p < 0.001), followed by mean force (r = -0.61; p < 0.001) and total work (r = -0.50; p < 0.001). It was concluded that under a severe work-to-rest ratio condition, power variables were better suited to evaluating repeated sprint ability than the other studied variables.
