The article describes the relational-interdependent self-construal scale, as well as its psychometric characteristics and psychological correlates. It is the measure, which has been adapted to Polish conditions. The relational-interdependent self-construal scale measures individual differences in the tendency to include close others in the self. The measure was first introduced by Cross, Bacon & Morris (2000). The items were created on the basis of the definition of relationalinterdependent self-construal and earlier studies. 1579 people participated in the studies aimed at conducting exploratory factor analysis and reliability analysis. Results indicate that the relational-interdependent self-construal scale consists of 9 items that form one factor. The measure is reliable and valid. There are gender differences in relational self-construal – women obtain higher scores. The relational- interdependent self-construal scale is positively associated with empathy (especially empathic concern and perspective taking), agreeableness (and to some extent with extraversion), communal values (those important for interpersonal relations, mostly with security, universalism, conformity and benevolence), and with satisfaction with romantic relationship. Relational-interdependent self-construal is not significantly associated with global self-esteem.

Aim Empathy is one of the widely appreciated qualities of a nurse. The benefit of this phenomenon is not only observed in the direct relationship with a patient but also in many other nurse’s relationships including the patient’s family, staff members, and superiors. The aim of this study was to analyze factors influencing nurse’s empathy. Material and methods The study was conducted in a group of 199 nurses working within the district of Gryfice in the Western Pomeranian Voivodeship. The study was carried out using a diagnostic poll method with the standardized Questionnaire of the Emphatic Understanding of Other People (KRE) and an own questionnaire. Results Studies have shown that only a small group of nurses had a high level of empathy (14.0%). There was a statistically significant correlation between the level of empathy among nurses and sociodemographic variables (age, place of residence) as well as reasons for the choice of the profession. Conclusions In the study group, nurses were mainly characterized by a low level of empathy even though they identified their attitude with sympathy for patients. According to my own research, nurses with longer work experience and the ones who live in small towns and villages show the greatest empathy. In addition, the important factors affecting the level of empathy are the choice of the profession because of its attractiveness and because of the willingness to help others.

The aim of the study was to assess self-reported individual differences in the use of the inner speech of adolescents with Social (Pragmatic) Communication Disorder (SCD) and in particular to answer the questions: Do adolescent with SCD have inner speech and what is the direction of this speech? Is this a monologue and internal dialogue, i.e., do they speak to themselves (internal monologue) or to other people (internal dialogue)? We tested 22 adolescents with SCD, diagnosed according to the DSM-5 criterion. The average age was 16.48 years, SD = 2.71. The youngest patient was 12 years old and the oldest was 19 years old. The modified version of the Puchalska-Wasyl Scale of Inner Speech was used for the study. The questionnaire was tailored to the capabilities of the persons with SCD and included questions about the occurrence of internal speech and the direction of this speech, that is, internal conversations to yourself (internal monologue) or to other people (internal dialogue). The patients participating in the experiment were informed in detail about the whole procedure and they or their parents, if they were under age, provided written consent for their participation in the experiment (according to the guidelines of the Helsinki Declaration, 2008). Statistical analysis showed that in adolescents with SCD there is a statistically significant relationship in the frequency of the monologue and internal dialogue. Persons who declared a more frequent occurrence of internal dialogue also declared more frequent occurrences of internal monologue, which means that they had the general ability for inner speech. A comparison of the direction of inner speech, that is the internal monologue and internal dialogue has shown that during inner speech they more often use internal dialogue than internal monologue. It was found that in adolescents with SCD, inner speech is present, and it manifests itself in the form of an internal monologue and internal dialogue. However, far more often do they use internal dialogue than internal monologue.

The aim of this study was to show the differences between groups of medical, law and psychology students in terms of empathy and psychopathy, as well as to show whether there are relationships between these variables in the studied groups. The study involved 70 female and 50 male students, constituting three equal groups of 40 people each, studying Medicine, Law and Psychology respectively. Two standardized tools were used in the study: the Index of Interpersonal Reactivity (IRI) by M.H Davis and the Polish adaptation of I. Pilch and her team's Triarchic Psychopathy Measure (TriPM), the original version of which was developed by Patrick, Fowles and Krueger, as well as a specially designed sociodemographic questionnaire. The study showed an inverse relationship between empathy and psychopathy and that there were differences in both empathy and psychopathy levels between different groups of students. Law students had lower levels of empathy in two di mensions according to the IRI than medical and psychology students. When analyzing the severity of some psychopathic traits and the overall psychopathy score according to TriPM, it was found that law students had the highest levels in the overall psychopathy score and meanness, but no statistically significant differences were observed in other TriPM variables between the groups studied. Law students had the lowest empathy scores of the groups studied, and medical students had slightly lower empathy scores than psychology students. It was also shown that law students had the highest overall psychopathy score of the three groups studied. Negative correlational relationships between empathy and psychopathy were observed in medical and law students – indicating that higher levels of empathy are associated with lower levels of psychopathy.

The aim of the study was to examine the level of knowledge and sensitivity to dysmorphic features in a child with facial and body dysmorphia on the part of students of medicine and dentistry. We tested 70 students of medicine and 70 students of dentistry. A photograph of a child with craniofacial microsomia (CFM)was shown to all the tested students. Their task was to detect and name those facial deformities and describe the child in terms of selected features not related to the child’s health condition. As a tool was used the Overgeneralization Effect Scale and a questionnaire designed by the author relating to facial deformities. Significant differences were observed in the level of knowledge and sensitivity to dysmorphic features between students of medicine and dentistry. Future dentists detected more dysmorphic features in the face of the photographed child when compared to students of medicine. Interestingly, this sensitivity to abnormalities was found to noticeably increase with each subsequent year of study for dentistry students, while the opposite was observed for the stu dents of medicine. Importantly, a relationship was observed be tween the sensitivity to dysmorphic features and the general evaluation of the child in terms of non-medical aspects by the group of dentistry students. With the increase in the students’ skills to recognize dysmorphic features, the overall evaluation of the child tended to decrease. The results obtained indicate that the skills related to recognizing dysmorphic features are better in students of dentistry than in students of medicine. The sensitivity to abnormalities evidently increase with each subsequent year of study for dentistry students, while the opposite was observed for medical students.

Introduction: The contact which occurs between a medical professional and a patient involves the occurrence of phenomena concerning the control of emotions, called emotional labour. The aim of the paper was to review specialist literature relating to emotional labour present in medical occupations. Material and method: With the use of EBSCO, Medline, ScienceDirect, Ovid MEDLINE databases and the PubMed search engine, relevant English-language full text articles published in 2010– 2017 were selected. Results: Sixty-two articles were selected that complied with the assumed criteria for the description of the issue. The articles concerned four thematic groups: emotional labour occurrence in various medical professions, the intrapersonal aspects of emotional labour, the interpersonal and organisational aspects of emotional labour and the negative consequences of emotional labour. Conclusions: The number of review and source articles confirming the presence of emotional labour in medical professions is growing year by year. In the health care system, emotional labour is still not a widely acknowledged phenomenon, with hardly any specialist training courses aimed at employees, and few organisational changes that would favour constructive methods of copying with the negative consequences of emotional labour.

Wstęp: W trakcie kontaktu pracownika medycznego z pacjentem zachodzą zjawiska związane z regulacją emocji nazywane pracą emocjonalną. Celem artykułu był przegląd literatury fachowej dotyczącej pracy emocjonalnej występującej w zawodach medycznych. Materiał i metoda: Za pomocą baz danych EBSCO, Medline, ScienceDirect, Ovid MEDLINE oraz wyszukiwarki PubMed wybrano artykuły anglojęzyczne i pełnotekstowe opublikowane w latach 2010–2017. Wyniki: Wybrano 62 artykuły spełniające założone kryteria do opisu omawianego zagadnienia. Artykuły dotyczyły czterech grup tematycznych: występowania pracy emocjonalnej w różnych zawodach medycznych, intrapersonalnych aspektów pracy emocjonalnej, interpersonalnych i organizacyjnych aspektów pracy emocjonalnej oraz negatywnych jej następstw. Wnioski: Rokrocznie rośnie liczba artykułów przeglądowych i źródłowych potwierdzających występowanie pracy emocjonalnej w zawodach medycznych. Praca emocjonalna w służbie zdrowia jest zjawiskiem nadal zbyt mało upowszechnionym, brakuje specjalistycznych kursów adresowanych do pracowników oraz zmian organizacyjnych sprzyjających konstruktywnym metodom radzenia sobie z negatywnymi jej następstwami.

Aim of paper: The aim of our study was to determine, if there is any correlation between medical students’ level of empathy and their preferred medical specialty. Material and methods: One hundred and ninety-nine students of Medical Faculty of £ódŸ Medical University were included in the study. There were 124 females and 75 males; 45.23% were 5th year students, 54.77% were 6th year students; their mean age was 24.07 years (SD=0.92). Subjects included in the study were asked to fill in a psychological test and a questionnaire with demographic data. Empathy was tested using the Empathy Understanding Questionnaire by A. Wêgliñski. Statistical analyinnysis included the two-factor variance analysis using post hoc Tukey tests. Results: The study revealed significant gender-dependent differences in empathy level (F=4.755; df=1; p=0.0305) and interaction of gender and preferred medical specialty in the field of influence on empathy level (F=2.138; df=7; p=0.0417). No significant association was noticed between empathy level and preferred specialty, although statistical analysis of test results almost reached statistical significance (F=2.001; df=7; p=0.0571). Male medical students declaring a preference for surgery show a significantly lower empathy than female medical students who prefer specialization in psychiatry, internal medicine, both in basic medical care and in hospital setting. Conclusions: Our results confirm a correlation of medical students’ empathy level and their gender, as well as between gender and preferred medical specialty. Male students who preferred surgery had significantly lower empathy level than female students who wanted to pursue a career in psychiatry and internal medicine.

Wnioski: Wyniki badania potwierdzają istnienie związku pomiędzy poziomem empatii studentów wydziału lekarskiego a płcią badanych i wskazują na istnienie interakcji pomiędzy płcią a wybieraną specjalizacją. Studenci preferujący chirurgię charakteryzują się istotnie niższym poziomem empatii niż studentki pragnące specjalizować się w zakresie psychiatrii i chorób wewnętrznych.

One of the newest methods of dealing with stress is museotherapy. It is a conscious use by art therapists of the positive impact of art collected in museums on the mental, physical, spiritual and social well-being of a specific person. This form of adjunctive therapy in the treatment of somatic and mental disorders offers unique benefits. It reduces the harmful effects of stress, improving quality of life with illness and future prognosis, and even accelerating recovery. Museotherapy increases awareness and, thanks to the participation of an art therapist, who establishes a bond with the patient, causes the patient to become more open, more likely to tell their own stories, and share their associations and emotions. This method also develops empathy, which is especially recommended for medical students and doctors as well. Museotherapy has already been introduced in the world to support the treatment of patients. In Canada and France there is a practice of the so-called “prescription museum” and “hospital museum”. In Poland, the pioneer of this therapy is Prof. Robert Kotowski, director of the National Museum in Kielce. This form of therapy is most often used by oncological patients, those with dementia (Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease and other), hypertension, diabetes, chronic pain, people on the autism spectrum and also the disabled. Mentioned activities promote creativity and achieve well-being, reduce anxiety, pain, depression, loneliness and insomnia, facilitate overcoming life difficulties, increase self-esteem and acceptance. Modern medicine is also integrated medicine, which combines classical medicine with other forms of therapy, among which museotherapy has a special place.

Ta forma terapii wspomagającej klasyczne leczenie chorób somatycznych i psychicznych daje wyjątkowe korzyści. W Kanadzie i Francji funkcjonuje praktyka tzw. „muzeum na receptę” i „muzeum w szpitalu”. W Polsce pionierem tej terapii jest prof. Robert Kotowski, dyrektor Muzeum Narodowego w Kielcach. Wspomniane działania wpływają na kreatywność i dobre samopoczucie, pomagają obniżyć poziom lęku, bólu i depresji, zmniejszają samotność i bezsenność, ułatwiają pokonywanie życiowych trudności, zwiększają poczucie własnej wartości, pomagają też w akceptacji samego siebie.
