Dry eye disease is a condition treated commonly by most of the ophthalmologists. The current understanding of the disease puts impact on its newly discovered components – ‘flares’. Flares are defined as exacerbations of dry eye disease. They take place in response to the triggers, which may be environmental or internal factors. During the ‘flare’ the immunological response is being activated and the patients experience the worsening of the symptoms. The introduction of the anti-inflammatory treatment (e.g. topical hydrocortisone solution) is the effective treatment in the cases of inflammatory state exacerbations.

A 48-year-old woman suffering from keratoconus of both eyes sought medical attention at the ophthalmology clinic with her left eye having been painful for prior 3 weeks, as well as increased sensitivity to light, foreign body sensation, stinging and watering eye. Her left eye was diagnosed with the dry eye syndrome, in addition to being treated with gas permable contact lens. Physical examination revealed corneal punctate epithelial erosions that stained positively with fluorescein in the left eye. The patient was ultimately diagnosed with dry eye disease of the left eye caused by gas permable contact lens usage.

Sacha inchi (Plukenetia volubilis) to roślina oleista pochodząca z tropikalnych lasów deszczowych w Ameryce Południowej. Nasiona rośliny stanowią potencjalne źródło makro- i mikroelementów, kwasu α-linolenowego i fitochemikaliów. Jednoośrodkowe, prospektywne, zaślepione badanie kliniczne zostało opracowane w celu określenia skuteczności i bezpieczeństwa wieloskładnikowej mikroemulsji sacha inchi (SIME) w leczeniu pacjentów z zespołem suchego oka. Autorzy jednoznacznie wykazali bezpieczeństwo wyrobu medycznego oraz wysoką skuteczność mikroemulsji SIME w odtworzeniu fizjologicznej funkcji ochronnej filmu łzowego i przywracaniu homeostazy powierzchni oka.

Sacha inchi (Plukenetia volubilis) is an oil plant native to tropical rainforests in South America. The seeds of the plant are a potential source of macro- and microelements, α-linolenic acid and phytochemicals. A single-centre, prospective, masked clinical study was designed to investigate the efficacy and safety of multi-ingredient sacha inchi microemulsion (SIME) eye drops in the treatment of patients with dry disease. Sacha inchi microemulsion (SIME) proved safe and efficacious in re-establishing the physiological protective tear film function and restoring the homeostasis of the ocular surface.
