Varthemia iphionoides is a perennial plant that belongs to Asteraceae family. This study investigates the cytotoxic effect of V. iphionoides essential oil on breast (MCF7), prostate (PC3), and chronic myelogenous leukemia (K562) and normal human fibroblast cell lines using MTT assay and flow cytometric analysis. In addition, GC-MS of the oil was carried out. The IC50 values for PC3, MCF7, K562 and fibroblast were 145.3, 188.8, 87.88 and 173.3 µg/ml, respectively. V. iphionoides essential oil was most effective against K562. Flow cytometric results for IC50 dose of V. iphionoides oil on K562 cells showed 32.2 % apoptosis in 24 h. GC-MS analysis resulted in the identification of 25 compounds. 1,8-Cineole, borneol, and α-cadinol were the major constituents of V. iphionoides volatile oil. In conclusion, this study reveals for the first time the cytotoxic activity of V. iphionoides essential oil on K562 cell line which may occur through apoptosis induction.

Cancer is responsible for the death of millions of people all around the world. Among the large group of cancers, the prevalence of breast cancer is highest in women. Therapeutic interventions, including removal surgery, radiation therapy, hormone therapy, and chemotherapy which is largely used, may cause adverse effects on the quality of patients’ life. This fact has encouraged researchers to find natural substances such as honey to overcome harmful effects. Nowadays, honey is recommended for plenty of abnormalities because of its antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and antimicrobial properties. Various studies have been conducted to explore the anticancer benefits of different types of honey from different origins. In this review, we are going to summarize in-vitro, animal, and human studies on the anti-breast cancer potential of honey.

Sclareol is a labdane-type phytochemical compound that, due to its pharmacological attributes and historical use in herbal medicine, has attracted noteworthy attention. Numbers of research, mainly through testing on human and animal models, have demonstrated a wide range of effects, by which using sclareol may be considered as an important method in cancer prevention. By using the key words sclareol, cancer, neoplasia, we extracted the articles published up to September 2020 through search in PubMed, SID, ISI Web of Science, Scholar, and Scopus. This study aimed to summarize the research and studies on sclareol and its effects on cancer prevention and treatment.

Growth of tumors is strongly dependent upon supply of nutrients and oxygen by de novo formed blood vessels. Inhibiting angiogenesis suppresses growth of primary tumors as well and affects development of metastases. We demonstrate that recombinant MBP/vasostatin fusion protein inhibits proliferation of endothelial cells in vitro. The therapeutic usefulness of such intratumorally delivered recombinant protein was then assessed by investigating its ability to inhibit growth of experimental murine melanomas. In the model of B16-F10 melanoma the MBP/vasostatin construct significantly delayed tumor growth and prolonged survival of treated mice. A combination therapy involving MBP/vasostatin construct and cyclophosphamide was even more effective and led to further inhibition of the tumor growth and extended survival. We show that such combination might be useful in the clinical setting, especially to treat tumors which have already formed microvessel networks.

In the present study, we have designed and synthesized a novel series of benzothiazolotriazole derivatives as potential anticancer agents. The anticancer activity of the newly synthesized compounds was evaluated against three cancerous cell lines; A549 (human lung adenocarcinoma), MCF-7 (human breast carcinoma) and Hep3B (human hepatocellular carcinoma) using MTT assay. Among this series, compounds 15 and 16 showed the most promising anticancer activity with IC50 values between 11.1 to 21.5 μM. Kinase profiling was performed for the most potent compounds 15 and 16 and it revealed weak inhibitory activity against 10 various kinases, where the highest inhibition was against CDK2/Cyclin A1 by compound 15. Furthermore, caspase-3/7 assay also indicated that the same compound 15 has the ability to induce apoptosis through the activation of effector caspase-3/7 family. Therefore, it could be deduced that the S-benzo[4,5]thiazolo[2,3-c][1,2,4]triazole is a promising novel anticancer scaffold with antiproliferative and apoptosis-inducing activities deserves to be taken up as a lead for further structural optimization.

Macroalgae from Fucus genus are a valuable source of bioactive components as they are abundant in complex polysaccharides, fatty acids and polyphenols. In this work, the biological activity and chemical composition of extracts and fractions obtained from endemic Fucus virsoides J. Agardh species collected in the summer and in the fall were investigated. From dichloromethane:methanol (1:1) extract three fractions were made: petroleum-ether, ethyl-acetate and n-butanol. The aim of the study was to examine the influence of the seasonal variations on algal composition and activity. The significant seasonal variation in content and biological activity of Fucus virsoides samples was found. Fall extract and fractions exerted higher cytotoxic effects on cancer cell lines in comparison with summer extract and fractions. The examined extracts and fractions showed higher cytotoxic activity towards cancer cells compared to normal fibroblast MRC5 cells. Morphological evaluation and cell cycle distribution analysis demonstrated their proapoptotic activity in human cervical adenocarcinoma HeLa cells. Fall extract and fractions better suppressed the migration and tube formation of EA.hy926 cells in comparison with summer extract and fractions. Fall extract and fractions were more potent in inhibition of α-glucosidase enzymatic activity. Ethyl-acetate fractions, from both seasons, exhibited the best antibacterial and antifungal activity on all tested bacteria and fungi. In conclusion, the two fall fractions ethyl-acetate and petroleum-ether rich in polyphenols and polyunsaturated fatty acids, were the most active and exhibited prominent anticancer and anti-α-glucosidase activities.

The essential oil from licorice seeds was prepared and investigated using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS), resulting in the identification of 47 beneficial components. The oil was found to be abundant in fatty acids: including linoleic acid (43.87%), palmitic acid (10.43%), oleic acid (4.51%), stearic acid (1.83%), and palmitoleic acid (1.25%). The oil’s physicochemical properties revealed an acid value of 0.066 mg/g, a peroxide value of 7.267 g/100g, an iodine value of 37.231 g/100g, and a saponification value of 186.823 mg/g, indicating that it can be regarded as a premium edible oil. The antioxidant activity of this oil showed that it has a antioxidant capacity with a free radical scavenging rate of up to 38.53% at a concentration of 15 mg/mL. The in vitro anticancer activities against lung cancer A549 cell lines and cervical cancer Hela cell lines showed that it inhibited the cancer cell lines with cell viability of 61% and 56% at a concentration of 100 mg/mL, respectively with a dose-depedent manner. This results indicate that the oil can be considered to be used as edible oil or potential applications in the field of food and medicine.
