Purpose. The aim of this study was to verify and analyze the association between anthropometric indicators and serum lipid profiles in adolescents. Methods. The study included 250 adolescents aged 11-17 years from both sexes. The anthropometric variables measured were body weight, height and waist circumference. Body mass index and waist circumference were used to calculate a nutritional status rating (whether normal weight or overweight) and abdominal obesity, respectively. Total cholesterol, high-density lipoproteins, low-density lipoprotein and triglyceride levels were determined by an enzymatic colorimetric method using automatic spectrophotometry and were categorized according to cutoff points established by the III Brazilian Guidelines on Dyslipidemia and Atherosclerosis Prevention from the Brazilian Society of Cardiology. Results. The overweight and abdominal obesity prevalence was found to be 23.6% and 40.0%, respectively. Undesirable total cholesterol, high-density lipoprotein, low-density lipoprotein and triglyceride levels were found in 40.8%, 8.4%, 36.0% and 13.6% of the studied adolescents, respectively. Overweight adolescents were 2.29 (CI 95%, 1.07-4.91) times more likely to have high triglyceride levels, and those with abdominal obesity were 2.47 (CI 95%, 1.14-5.37) times more likely to show high triglyceride levels. Conclusions. A high prevalence of overweight and abdominally obese adolescents, with high levels of serum lipid profiles, were observed. Moreover, overweight and abdominally obese adolescents were more likely to have high triglyceride levels.

Objectives: The roles of cardiorespiratory fitness (CF) in reducing cardiovascular disease (CVD) and allcause mortality risks are well established; however, little is known about the role of CF in reducing risk of metabolic syndrome (MetS), a cluster of CVD risk factors, particularly in Asian countries. This research examined associations between CF and MetS diagnosis and its five components in Indonesian middle-aged and older adults. Methods: This cross-sectional study included 161 participants (aged 63±8 years; 70% female). CF was assessed with a 6-minute walk test. MetS diagnosis and its components were assessed with the Adult Treatment Panel III. Logistic regression modelling was conducted to examine the relationships between CF and MetS diagnosis and its components, after adjustment for BMI and other confounders. BMI was categorized using cut-points for Asians. Results: In adjusted models, participants with low CF had a greater likelihood of being diagnosed with MetS than those with high CF (OR=4.79, 95%CI:2.17-10.62). They were also more likely to have low highdensity lipoprotein (OR=2.07, 95%CI:1.02-4.18) or hypertriglyceridemia (OR=2.37, 95%CI:1.15-4.86). There was also borderline significant findings that suggested that participants with low CF had greater likelihood of having abdominal obesity (OR=2.34, 95%CI:0.97-5.65, p=0.06) or hyperglycaemia (OR=2.07 95%CI:0.98-4.41, p=0.06). Conclusions: Low CF is associated with increased likelihood of being diagnosed with MetS. The adverse effects of low CF are mainly characterized by dyslipidaemia. Public health messages should emphasise the importance of improving CF for preventing MetS. Assessment of CF could be useful for targeting individuals most likely to benefit from intervention to prevent MetS.

INTRODUCTION: Coxarthrosis has been considered a disease affecting the elderly; nonetheless, it is increasingly affecting younger people, resulting in their disability and absence from work. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The study was conducted among 100 patients with coxarthrosis subsequently admitted to orthopaedic wards in regional hospitals. The results were obtained via an interview conducted with the patients as well as by means of an original survey questionnaire. The analysis was conducted for two groups, taking into account two age groups: the younger one (n = 30) – people below 60 years old and the older ones (n = 70) – people aged ≥ 60 years old. RESULTS: The following factors predisposing to the development of coxarthrosis were the most observable in the younger group of patients: abdominal obesity – 27 (90%), faulty postures – 20 (67%), sedentary work ≥ 8 h/day in the absence of regular physical activity after work – 19 (63%), overweight – 15 (50%), hard physical work – 14 (47%), and standing work ≥ 8 h/day – 14 (47%). The following factors predisposing to the development of coxarthrosis were the most observable in the older group of patients: abdominal obesity – 67 (96%), sedentary work ≥ 8 h/day in the absence of regular physical activity after work – 43 (61%), faulty postures – 38 (54%), hard physical work – 37 (53%), overweight – 36 (51%), and metabolic syndrome – 33 (47%). CONCLUSIONS: The patients from the study group were burdened with numerous factors predisposing to the development of coxarthrosis, out of which the most frequent ones were: abdominal obesity and sedentary work, while a family history of degenerative changes occurred most rarely.

WSTĘP: Chorobę zwyrodnieniową stawu biodrowego (ChZSB), zwaną koksartrozą, uznawano za występującą głównie u ludzi w podeszłym wieku, niemniej jednak coraz częściej dotyka osób młodszych, przyczyniając się do ich inwalidztwa i absencji w pracy. MATERIAŁ I METODY: Badania przeprowadzono u 100 pacjentów z ChZSB, przyjmowanych kolejno na od-działy ortopedyczne szpitali rejonowych. Analizy dokonano dla dwóch grup, uwzględniających dwa przedziały wiekowe: osoby młodsze (n = 30) – poniżej 60 roku życia (r.ż.), i osoby starsze (n = 70) – w wieku ≥ 60 lat. WYNIKI: W młodszej grupie chorych najczęstszymi czynnikami predysponującymi do rozwoju koksartrozy były: otyłość brzuszna – 27 (90%), wady postawy – 20 (67%), praca na siedząco ≥ 8 h/dobę przy braku regularnej aktywności fizycznej po pracy – 19 (63%), nadwaga – 15 (50%), ciężka praca fizyczna – 14 (47%), praca na stojąco ≥ 8 h/dobę – 14 (47%); w starszej grupie chorych były to: otyłość brzuszna – 67 (96%), praca na siedząco ≥ 8h/dobę przy braku regularnej aktywności fizycznej po pracy – 43 (61%), wady postawy – 38 (54%), ciężka praca fizyczna – 37 (53%), nadwaga – 36 (51%), zespół metaboliczny – 33 (47%). WNIOSKI: U chorych z badanej grupy występowały liczne czynniki predysponujące do rozwoju ChZSB, najczęstsze zaś były otyłość brzuszna i praca na siedząco; obciążenie rodzinne w kierunku zmian zwyrodnieniowych występowało rzadziej.

Abdominal obesity becomes very significant health’s problem, especially because it is connected with pathogenesis of cardiovascular diseases. Adipose tissue is not only a store of excess energy but a hormonally active system too. The substances produced by adipose tissue are adipocytokines. Two of them are leptin and adiponectin. Adiponectin levels are inversely related to the adiposity degree, despite of adipose tissue is only source of it. concentrations of adiponectin have been reported to be decreased in patients with coronary artery diseases, type II diabetes mellitus, hypertensions and dyslipidemia patients in some insulin resistant states. It takes part in processes regulate glucose and lipid metabolism and it has anti-inflammatory and antiatherogenic properties. Adiponectin has a potential protective ability towards to cardiovascular diseases. Positive correlation with degree of adiposity has been reported for leptin – hormone involved in the regulation of food intake and energy expenditure. Leptin exerts many potentially atherogenic effects. It has been reported to influence on arterial hypertension, endothelial dysfunction, platelet aggregation, insulin resistant and activation of sympathetic system. In this way it can play very important role in development of stroke. Recent studies suggest that adiponectin and leptin may play an important role in obesity-associated cerebrovascular diseases. There is still too little evidence to say that these two hormones are independent marks of ischemic stroke and confirm their role in stroke pathogenesis.

Otyłość brzuszna staje się coraz istotniejszym problemem zdrowotnym, głównie ze względu na związaną z nią koincydencję rozwoju chorób sercowo-naczyniowych. Tkanka tłuszczowa jest nie tylko źródłem zapasów energii, ale również hormonalnie czynnym systemem. Substancje wydzielane przez komórki tkanki tłuszczowej to adipocytokiny, do których zaliczamy między innymi leptynę i adiponektynę. Pomimo iż tkanka tłuszczowa jest jedynym źródłem adiponektyny, paradoksalnie jej stężenie w otyłości ulega obniżeniu. Ponadto niższe stężenia wykazano u chorych z chorobą niedokrwienną serca, cukrzycą typu II, nadciśnieniem tętniczym i dyslipidemią, czyli w stanach prawdopodobnej insulinooporności. Adiponektyna bierze udział w procesach usprawniających metabolizm glukozy i lipidów oraz wykazuje działanie przeciwzapalne i przeciwmiażdżycowe, a więc i potencjalnie ochronne działanie wobec chorób sercowo-naczyniowych. Ze wzrostem zgromadzonej tkanki tłuszczowej pozytywnie koreluje poziom leptyny, hormonu uczestniczącego w regulacji poboru pożywienia i wykorzystania energii. Leptyna wykazuje wiele potencjalnie proaterogennych właściwości. Poprzez między innymi wpływ na ciśnienie krwi, układ fibrynolityczny, funkcje śródbłonka, agregację płytek, oporność na insulinę oraz aktywację układu sympatycznego może odgrywać istotną rolę w rozwoju niedokrwiennego udaru mózgu. Badania sugerują, że adiponektyna i leptyna mogą stanowić ogniwo łączące otyłość z chorobami naczyniowymi OUN. Wciąż jednak istnieje zbyt mało danych, by uznać oba hormony za niezależne markery wystąpienia udaru niedokrwiennego mózgu oraz potwierdzić ich rolę w jego patogenezie.
