Development of measuring techniques enabled execution of detailed in situ measurements in the maritime part of the Vistula estuary. The data gathered were then used for verification of a three-dimensional model. In situ measurements of hydrodynamic conditions (magnitude and direction of water currents, salinity, temperature) were carried out in autumn 1995 as short-term and long-term registrations. Calculations done by the numerical model, based on collected hydro-meteorological data, agree well with short-term registrations. The influence of the forcing functions and numerical coefficients on the results of modelling are discussed.

The extent of the River Wisla (Vistula) water plume in the Gulf of Gdansk was investigated using SeaWiFS (Sea-viewing Wide Field-of-view Sensor) data as the basis for PCA (Principal Components Analysis), indexation, composite and classic methods of classification (i.e. maximum likelihood classification and fuzzy sets). The percentage transformation of this data is suggested in order to obtain a high relative diversity of remotely sensed signals emerging from optically different waters. Comparison of the results obtained using these different classification methods showed that PCA was especially useful in this respect.

This is a review of data that were obtained in the past and in more recent years by various authors who have often been involved in collective, interdisciplinary studies of the usefulness of phytoseston for evaluating the water quality of the Upper Vistula River. It is commonly known that drifting microflora in riverine bioseston is primarily a mixture of benthic forms that have been washed out from the bottom ? their prior habitat. A considerable contribution of allochthono-us forms were found among them. They originated from a reservoir created by river damming and also from tributaries. Generally, at the end of the 1990s at some Sites of the studied sector of the Vistula River there was intense development of potentially toxic cyanobacteria. The predominant taxa (e.g., Microcystis spp., Anabaena spp., Woronichinia naegeliana) and coccal green algae (e.g., Scenedesmus spp., Pediastrum spp.) are usually noted in eutrophic water bodies. These taxa competed with diatoms or sometimes prevailed over them in abundant populations. Since these groups were omitted from the benthic diatom index method, phytoseston analysis contributed very important additional information to the diatom index results applied by other authors.

The aim of this study was to characterize the mud crab Rhithropanopeus harrisii ssp. tridentatus that occurs in the Dead Vistula. Of the 220 specimens collected, 57% were males and 43% were females. Females with eggs on the pleopods were present throughout June, July and August. The carapace width varied from 4.9 mm to 22.4 mm and length ranged from 4.1 mm to 16.3 mm. The highest frequency (49.1%) was observed in the 9.1-13.5 mm width class. The wet weight of the specimens varied from 0.045 to 4.299 g. The results obtained indicate that no significant changes in the morphology or life cycle of the R. harrisii tridentatus from the Dead Vistula River have occurred in the last 30 years.

The potential chemical impact of a treated sewage discharged from the ?Gdansk-Wschod? Sewage Treatment Plant to the Gulf of Gdansk was studied. A physical and chemical investigation of the sediments sampled in the area of the planned collector outlet as well as results of an earlier research were the basis for the present paper. A spatial distribution of majority of the studied sediment components shows a distinctive zoning that is clearly due to them being supplied by the Vistula River (Wisla River). This is particular for the mercury, lead, zinc and chromium as well as organic carbon and phosphorus. A distribution of the redox potential shows too a distinctive relation to the Vistula River mouth. Starting a sewage discharge through a new collector located between the two river mouths of the Wisla Smiala and the Wisla Przekop can move westwards the presently observed zoning of increased concentrations of some chemicals. However, most probably such changes will be small and they will not cumulate themselves over time.

Biological and chemical processes occurring in seawater from the Gulf of Gdansk, 'enriched' with Vistula river water, were studied in a series of microcosm experiments covering different seasons of the year. Concentrations of inorganic forms of nitrogen were, with one exception, 25 - 800 times higher in the Vistula water than those in the sea; phosphates were from 3.5 to 70 times higher. Two phases were observed during the incubations: during the first there were marked increases in primary production, chlorophyll concentration and bacterial production, and a de-crease in nutrient concentrations. The second phase was characterised by a lack of phosphates, a gradual decrease in chlorophyll concentrations, and an increase in zooplankton abundance. During the growing season the first phase lasted only a few days, during which nitrates and silicates were taken up at a rate of 2-4 mmol?dm-3?d-1 and phosphates and ammonia at a rate of 0.05-0.3 mmol?dm-3?d-1. Further phytoplankton growth and further nutrient uptake were most frequently limited by phosphorus depletion. Phosphorus was probably also a factor limiting bacte-rioplankton growth, which appeared to be correlated with primary production. In spring and autumn phytoplankton growth was additionally limited due to grazing by protozooplankton and rotifers, in summer by nitrogen exhaustion.
