The electronic absorption spectra of 29 phenyl-ring substituted chalcones have been investigated with the time-dependent density functional theory (TD-DFT) and polarizable continuum TD-DFT (PCM-TD-DFT). It turns out that the hybrid PBE1PBE functional with the 6-31G basis set provide reliable λmax when the solvent effects are included in the model. Comparisons with experimental values lead to a mean absolute error of 12 nm (0.136 eV). Moreover, the observed substituent effects are reproduced by calculation qualitatively. The λmax of substituted chalcone in phenyl ring A is less sensitive to substitution than that in ring B. The linear correlation of Hammett’s substituent constants (σP) with LUMO energies is better with respect to HOMO energies. The calculation reveals that the maximum absorption band mainly results from the π→π* transition from HOMO to LUMO. The analysis of the electron density plots of frontier molecular orbitals show that most transitions should be of valence excitation nature. [...]

In this study, a series of new 5-phenylazo-6-aminouracil dyes were prepared by linking m-,p-nitroaniline, m-,p-chloroaniline, m-,p-anisidine, m-,p-toluidine, m-,p-cyanoaniline, p-ethoxyaniline, p-phenoxyaniline, p-ethylaniline, p-acetamidoaniline, p-acetylaniline, p-carboxyaniline and aniline to 6-aminouracil. The prepared dyes were characterized by UV-vis, FT-IR, 1H NMR spectroscopic techniques and elemental analysis. The effect of acid and base upon the UV-vis spectra of these dyes were investigated. In addition, the solvatochromic behaviors and substituent effects in various solvents were evaluated. [...]

The complexation energies of H3BNHnCl3−n (n= 3-0) complexes and the proton affinities of NHnCl3−n compounds have been computed at the G2(MP2) level of theory. G2(MP2) results show that the successive chlorine substitution on the ammonia decreases both the basicity of the NHnCl3−n ligands and the stability of H3BNHnCl3−n complexes. The findings are interpreted in terms of the rehybridisation of the nitrogen lone-pair orbital. The NBO partitioning scheme shows that the variation of the N-H and N-Cl bond lengths, upon complexation, is due to variation of “s” character in these bonds. [...]
