Phytoplankton of Sulejow Reservoir was investigated in 1979-1993. Over that period, blue-green algae were usually a constant component of phytoplankton. Their percentage in the total phytoplankton biomass widely varied both from season to season and from year to year. Maximum values were noted in summer, although sometimes a shift of peak development toward spring or even winter was observed. The development was not uniform in the whole area of the reservoir; blue-green algae dominated in the middle and downstream, that is in the deepest parts of the reservoir. The main components of phytoplankton included Microcystis aeruginosa K?tz. and Aphanizomenon flos-aquae (L.) Ralfs.

Psammon rotifers were investigated in two lakes of different trophy and degrees of pollution. The Plawniowice Duze Reservoir is mesotrophic, while the Dzierzno Duze Reservoir is highly eutrophic and polluted. Samples were collected from three zones on sandy beaches - one meter above the shoreline (eupsammon), at the shoreline (hygropsammon) and below the water level (hydropsammon). A larger number of rotifer species (28) was detected in the Plawniowice Duze Reservoir than in the Dzierzno Duze Reservoir (18). The species structure of the rotifer communities differed in the two reservoirs. While the density of eupsammic rotifers observed in both reservoirs was high, significant differences were noted in the abundance of them. The dominant species were Cephalodella gibba, Cephalodella catellina and Lecane closterocerca.

The reservoir where the studies were carried out was originated by modification of an old oxbow lake of the Vistula River. The most important sources of inflowing waters are industrial waters from ?Pulawy Fertilizer Factory?. The highest variability of concentration, was NH4+-N and also Cl-, Ntot., and PO4-3. Some significant correlations between chemical properties of water and algae (especially green algae and diatoms) were found, which suggested that this phytoplankton was mainly responsible for the biogeochemical cycles in the shallow, strongly polluted reservoir. Another interesting phenomenon was the statistically positive correlation between the density of cyanobacteria and potassium, which suggested that it may play an important role in their abundance.

The distribution of algae and zooplankton on two transects across reed and Polygonum stands was observed. The algal community in the Polygonum stand had a mosaic structure mainly comprised of green algae plus desmids and diatoms (Pediastrum simplex, Scenedesmus acutus, Closterium ehrenbergii), whereas blue-green algae (cyanobacteria) Microcystis aeruginosa and Woronichinia naegeliana dominated from the reed boundary towards open waters. Some species, such as Euchlanis dilatata, prefer to be associated with plants, while others, like Synchaeta kitina, are more numerous in open waters. On a windward shore, wind at a velocity of 4 ? 5 m s-1 caused a slow back current from 8 to 18 m h-1. Movements of water were sometimes linear, but at times they developed in two dimensions.

Zooplankton was the only food component of common bream and silver bream, and the main food component of roach and bleak in the pelagic zone of the Dobczyce Reservoir (southern Poland) from April to October 1994. Cladocera and Copepoda constituted 67.9% of the food consumed by the whole fish community. The average size of eaten individuals ranged from 0.62 to 1.43 mm. Planktivorous fishes selected phytoplankton-controlling filtrators, mainly large Daphnia species, which were eliminated most effectively in the summer.
