The analytical microextraction methods of gas chromatography coupled with flame ionisation detector (GC-FID) for determination of selected essential oils in herbs were proposed. Two microextraction methods for the isolation of essential oils from plants such as Lavandula spica L., Melissa officinalis L., Mentha piperita L. and Salvia officinalis L. were used. The methods of solid-phase and single-drop microextractions, were optimised and compared. The obtained LOD values for all studied essential oils were found to be within 2.5–20.5 μg for SDME and 57.0–139.8 μg for SPME method per 100 g of dried sample leaves. The appropriate LOQ values were then 8.4–68.4 μg for SDME and 189.8–466.1 μg for SPME of target analytes per 100 g of dried sample leaves. [...]

The demand for native medicinal plants has gained much attention among the developing tropical regions of the world in the last decades owing to their relative affordability, acclaimed efficacy and perceived user safety. The rise in the prevalence of chronic diseases, potential treatments and possible cures has led not only to increased patronage, but also to their combination with conventional medicine for better health care delivery and speedy recovery. In this present study, factors influencing these developments were examined. Hence, interview and semi-structured questionnaires were randomly administered among 104 respondents in Ibadan North Local Government Area of Oyo State, Nigeria. Civil servants, self employed (Herb sellers, traditional medicine practitioners and farmers), unemployed (aged people) and students. Based on the responses obtained, 85% of the respondent stated that they make use of herbs, while 12.5% disagreed and 1.9% was undecided. However, 50%, 38% and 14%, agreed, disagreed and were undecided, respectively to combining herbs and orthodox medicine. Occupation was shown to significantly influence the level of herbal usage and its combination with orthodox medicine. The study revealed the high dependence on herbs and the combined of the use of the same with orthodox medicine, with occupation playing a significant role in each case. These observations underscore the importance of traditional medicine as a subsystem of good health delivery and that a double practice exists among health care seekers.

Electrochemical DNA biosensors are promising tools for the fast, inexpensive and simple in vitro analysis for the determination of free radicals and antioxidants. High concentrations of antioxidants in such compounds as phenolic acids and plant extracts, act as free radical terminators which reduce the effect of the oxidative dam-age on DNA. The electrochemical behavior of three representative phenolic acids, caffeic acid, gallic acid and trolox were studied by cyclic voltammetry. Moreover, the determination of the above antioxidants under the optimized conditions (scan rate, deposition potential and time) using differential pulse voltammetry was also investigated. In vitro studies focused on their antioxidative effect were performed by adsorptive transfer stripping voltammetry and dsDNA biosensor. Using Fenton’s system, with FeSO4 and H2O2 was chosen as a strong oxidative system. Herbal medications are gaining popularity in many countries. Although most can be used without any problem, serious toxicities do occur. Adverse events can be anticipated when herbal medications are used at excessive dose, long-term, for non-approved indications or by patients who are using multiple medications. Adverse events should be anticipated when these herbal medications with identified pharmacological effects or toxic ingredients are used. Healthcare professionals need to discuss or advise patients regarding their use. Physician-obtained medication histories towards specific herbal product use could provide relevant pharmacologic information and uncover cases of adverse events or toxicity from the used herbal products.
