Brilliant green was used as a complexing agent in cloud point extraction (CPE) and applied for selective preconcentration of trace amounts of gold in geological matrices. The analyte in the initial aqueous solution was acidified with hydrochloric acid (0.1 M) and octylphenoxypolyethoxyethanol (Triton X-114) was added as a surfactant. After phase separation, based on the cloud point separation of the mixture, the surfactant rich phase was diluted with methanol and the analyte determined in the surfactant rich phase by flame atomic absorption spectrometry (FAAS). After optimization of the complexation and extraction conditions, a preconcentration factor of 31 was obtained for only 10 mL of sample. The analytical curve was linear in the range of 3–1000 ng mL−1 and the limit of detection was 1.5 ng mL−1. The proposed method was applied to the determination of gold in geological samples. [...]

Two-step synthesis of high aspect ratio gold nanorods

100%
EN
We describe a very simple, two-step synthetic method to prepare gold nanorods with extremely high aspect ratios (> 20) and average lengths of more than 1000 nm. The method is based on a seed-mediated growth in presence of the surfactant cetyltrimethylammonium bromide. The length and aspect ratios of the nanorods can be manipulated by varying the surfactant concentration.

The main goal of the present study was to investigate the effects of silver and gold ions on cholinesterases (ChEs) activity due to increasing application of these metals in a wide variety of nanomaterials. A chromogenic assay using the substrate o-nitrophenyl acetate/butyrate made it possible to conclude unmistakably that both metals inhibit ChEs. Addition of bovine serum albumin (BSA) indicates that binding of metal ions to albumin could serve to scavenge metals and consequently reduce their amount for reaction with ChEs. The effects of metal ions on ChE should be taken into consideration when using this enzyme as an environmental biomarker. [...]

In the present work, the cobalt electrodeposition onto polycrystalline gold electrodes from aqueous solutions containing 0.01M CoSO4 + 1 M (NH4)2SO4 at pH=7 was analyzed. Linear voltammetry results suggested a change in the kinetic of the cobalt electrodeposition. In all cases, the nucleation rate (A), the number of active nucleation sites (N 0) and the saturation number of nuclei (N s ) values were potential dependent. The calculated Gibbs free energy (ΔG) for this system was 1.88×10−20 J nuclei−1 and the transfer coefficient for the Hydrogen Electroreduction Reaction (HER) was 0.47. [...]

Nanopatterns of gold clusters on a large surface of oriented Si(111) substrates, from the galvanic displacement of gold salt (via the spontaneous reduction of AuCl4 -), are demonstrated in this work. The Si substrate is patterned by Focused Ion Beam (FIB) prior to being dipped in a gold solution. Here, we show that these patterns lead to successful control of the position and size of gold clusters. Sequential patterning reveals a powerful maskless alternative to surface preparation prior to Si nanowire growth
