INTRODUCTION: At home, the parents take care of the child's safety, but when the child is in school or kindergarten, it is the educator that takes care of the child. The awareness of dangers the child is exposed to at every moment of his or her activity during the day obliges educators to have up-to-date knowledge of first aid. The marked differences in anatomy, physiology and mechanisms of life-threatening conditions make the principles of first aid differ from those of an adult. First aid courses organised for both educators and pedagogy students should focus on highlighting these differences and learning how to deal with individuals of all ages. The aim of the study is to assess the level of knowledge and practical skills among pedagogy students and to identify aspects requiring adjustments to the curriculum of future teachers. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The study was conducted in 2022 at the Institute of Pedagogy at the University of Siedlce, Poland. Sixty-three pedagogy students participated in it. For the purpose of the study, a survey questionnaire covering the principles of first aid for children and a practical task evaluation sheet were created. Practical skills were assessed using the Resusci Junior QCPR simulator and a 0-15 point rating scale. RESULTS: The study included as many as 63 students of early childhood and pre-school pedagogy. The mean score achieved on the theory test was M=11.49 out of a possible 14 points (SD±1.24). The highest number of correct answers were given by students for the following questions: actions performed when assessing the child's breathing (n=63; 100%) and placing the child in the safe position (n=61; 96.8%). In contrast, the fewest correct answers were related to the rate of chest compressions (n=27; 42.9%). In the practical task, as many as 15 child CPR activities were considered. The average points scored by students on the practical task was M=6.73 out of a possible 15 points (SD±2.73). The average quality of compressions performed was M=28.59% (SD±30.41), breaths M=17.7% (SD±17.70) and chest compression depth was M=20.29% (SD±27.98). CONCLUSIONS: The level of theoretical knowledge and practical skills of pedagogy students is clearly insufficient to provide effective first aid to children. Significant differences were observed among students taking first aid classes onsite versus remotely. Having theoretical knowledge does not translate into practical skills. It seems that it is necessary to modify the curriculum for training future educators in first aid for children.

INTRODUCTION: : Life-threatening conditions occurring in the first months of child's life usually happen in the presence of witnesses who are at the same time the parents or caregivers of the victim. In such situations, provision of first aid increases their chance of survival. The knowledge and skills in this area should be taught already Turing antenatal classes. The study aimed to assess the level of knowledge and awareness of pregnant women around first aid for newborns and infants. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The study was conducted in a department of gynaecology and obstetrics in Warsaw In Q1 2021. A research tool in the form of an original knowledge test was prepared. The test covered the knowledge of resuscitation, burns, convulsions, anaphylaxis, fever, aspirations and disturbances of consciousness. Statistical analysis was conducted with the Shapiro–Wilk test and Spearman's rank correlation test and the results were interpreted according to J. Guilford's classification. A p-value < 0.05 was accepted as statistically significant. RESULTS: 238 women were enrolled in the study, aged 30.86 years on average (SD±4.86). Nearly a half (48.3%) of them was in their first pregnancy. The antenatal classes had been attended by 57.6% of the women; 35.7% had undergone first aid courses during those classes. The mean self-assessment of knowledge of the pregnant women was 3.36 (SD±0.97) and the mean self-assessment of their skills 3.16 (SD±0.96) on the five-point Likert scale. The correct answer average was 5.98 points. (SD±1.75) on a 0-10 scale. The largest gaps were demonstrated in the flowchart of management of cardiac arrest and disturbance of consciousness. CONCLUSIONS: The knowledge and skills of pregnant women regarding first aid stand at an average level. The results suggest the need for implementation of proper courses in first aid in the curriculum of antenatal classes

WSTĘP: Stany zagrożenia życia występujące w pierwszych miesiącach życia dziecka zazwyczaj zdarzają się w obecności świadków, będących zarazem rodzicami lub opiekunami poszkodowanego. Wówczas prawidłowe udzielenie pierwszej pomocy zwiększa szanse na przeżycie. Wiedza i umiejętności w tym zakresie powinny być przekazywane już w szkołach rodzenia. Celem badania była ocena poziomu wiedzy oraz świadomości kobiet ciężarnych z zakresu pierwszej pomocy u noworodków i niemowląt. MATERIAŁ I METODY: Badanie zrealizowano na oddziale ginekologiczno-położniczym w Warszawie w pierwszym kwartale 2021 r..Przygotowano narzędzie badawcze w formie autorskiego testu wiedzy, obejmującego wiedzę z kategorii resuscytacji, oparzeń, drgawek, anafilaksji, gorączki, zadławień, oraz zaburzeń świadomości. Do opracowania statystycznego użyto testu rozkładu normalności Shapiro-Wilka, korelacji rho-Spearman’a, a wyniki interpretowano wg skali J. Guilford’a. Poziom istotności przyjęto dla p<0,05. WYNIKI: W badaniu uczestniczyło 238 kobiet, ze średnią wieku 30,86 lat (SD±4,86). Prawie połowa (48,3%) ankietowanych była w pierwszej ciąży. Do szkoły rodzenia uczęszczało 57,6% kobiet, w tym 35,7% w trakcie zajęć miało przeprowadzone kursy z pierwszej pomocy. Średnia samoocena wiedzy ciężarnych wyniosła 3,36 (SD±0,97), a średnia samooceny umiejętności 3,16 (SD±0,96) w pięciostopniowej skali Likerta. Średnia poprawnych odpowiedzi wyniosła 5,98 pkt. (SD±1,75) w skali 0-10. Największe braki wykazano w zakresie schematu postępowania przy zatrzymaniu krążenia oraz zaburzeniach świadomości. WNIOSKI: Wiedza oraz umiejętności kobiet ciężarnych z zakresu pierwszej pomocy są na przeciętnym poziomie. Wyniki sugerują konieczność wdrożenia odpowiednich kursów z pierwszej pomocy do programu szkoły rodzenia.
