A new European habitat of Paramecium sexaurelia was found in Greece in the Lake Joannina, Joannina town, the Epirus region. It is also the first report concerning the investigations on the P. aurelia species complex in Greece.

Peroxisomes of the trophozoites of Balantidium coli isolated from pig intestine content were investigated, using ultrastructural and cytochemical techniques. The peroxisomes of B. coli trophozoites from pigs with subclinical balantidiasis are less then 0.8 mm in diameter whereas those from pigs with acute balantidiasis are greater than 0.8 mum in diameter. In all the trophozoites peroxisomes are round, oval or dumb-bell shaped. Catalase as an indicative enzyme was detected by cytochemical techniques in B. coli peroxisomes.

Cytophotometric assays were performed on Balantidium coli trophozoites isolated from 30 pigs affected by acute balantidiasis (Group I) and from 30 pigs with symptom-free balantidiasis (Group II). Trophozoites from cultures obtained from Group I and II pig isolates were assayed for comparison. Comparative cytophotometric studies on nucleic acids of B.coli trophozoites isolated from acute and symptomless balantidiasis-affected pigs as well as from in vitro cultured trophozoites showed differences which could have resulted from diferences between populations in the trophozoans under investigation.

Dilutions of Isathrine 10 EC containing in 100 cm3 of water up to 1.25 mg of bioresmethrin were toxic to paramecia, causing 100% mortality immediately or within a few seconds of treatment. In a dilution containing 0.625 mg% of bioresmethrin the mean number of surviving paramecia was 8 after 24 hours' treatment. Lower concentrations posed no threat to paramecia.

The pyrethroide,Fastac 10 EC was tested on the paramecia and Tubifex sp. The results showed that both tests are valid for estimation of the toxicity of the pesticide. However, the Paramecium test is more sensitive when one is investigating the direct toxicity of the compound. The great validity of the Tubifex test lies in the possibility of tracing the teratogenic effects of the pesticides.

The study revealed an impoverishment of the planktonic community in water bodies of the Krakow region (Borek Falecki). The results compared with data obtained from 1959-1966 in the same area.Areduction in the number of taxa, especially ciliates, can now be observed.Paramecium novaurelia was the only species noted among the four species of the P.aurelia complex previously found in this area.

In the present paper the results are given of the studies, i.e. intra- and inter-strain crosses carried out between the Polish and the Czech strains (from the Sudeten Mts) and the standard one. Also inter-strain crosses were made between strains from remote regions of Europe, i.e. from Poland and Romania, and from Poland and Spain. The results showed that strains coming from different habitats of the Sudeten Mts as well as from the remote regions of Europe, i.e. Poland, Spain, and Romania, or even originating from Europe and the USA, were not genetically differentiated within P. triaurelia. The studied strains can interbreed in spite of their geographical isolation. The results indicate that in the studied species of the P. aurelia complex there exists a type of breeding system which can be called moderate inbreeding.

The oxygen consumption of 6 ciliated protozoa species in conditions of different oxygen concentration was studied using the electrode polarograph. Two types of dependence have been suggested to describe the ciliate oxygen consumption rates (OCR) under different oxygen concentrations. A high level of ciliate respiratory metabolism was established, both large and small ciliates reacting moreover under the oxygen changes similarly. Coefficients for correcting respiration at the lower oxygen concentrations were developed.

The results of intra- and inter-strain crosses carried out between the Ukrainian strains and the standard one are presented. Also inter-strain cross was made between strains from distant regions of Europe, i.e. from Spain and Ukraine. The results showed that strains coming from different localities in Ukraine as well as from the distant regions of Europe, i.e. Spain and Ukraine, or even originating from Europe and the USA, were not genetically differentiated within P. triaurelia. The studied strains can interbreed in spite of their geographical isolation. The results indicate that in the studied species of the P. aurelia complex there exists a type of breeding system which can be called moderate inbreeding.

The occurrence of animal communities in certain water bodies of the Babia region (the Upper Zawoja and its vicinity) was studied. Some problems of environmental pollution and impoverishment of the plankton organisms in the waters of the region are discussed.

After treatment of the paramecia with 0.0005% cartap solution a high mortality of the paramecia of the postautogamic experimental group was observed. In the studied postautogamic experimental daily isolation line some defective paramecia were found. The abnormality was manifested by a defective separation of animals during binary fission resulting in the formation of chain forms.

The 14 lakes (habitats) on the southern slope of the Tatras were investigated with regard to the Paramecium aurelia species complex and other zooplankton. No species of the aurelia group were found.Impoverishment of the remaining zooplankton was noted.

The mucocyst ultrastructure in B. coli has not been described so far. As demonstrated in this work, cytoenzymatic assays on B. coli with the use of a reaction-detecting membrane-coupled hydrolase, i.e., ATP-ase, permitted identification of the mucocysts in the ciliate studied. The shape, size, and location of mucocysts in B. coli trophozoites were found to correspond to descriptions of these structures in other ciliates. The mucocysts were more numerous in B. coli trophozoites isolated from the symptomatic balantidiosis-affected pigs (Group I), and the product of reaction to ATP-ase was more copious than in Group II trophozoites. However, not all the bubble-like structures with similar morphological features reacted positively to the enzyme. The discrepancy was explained by the cytoenzymatic reaction to Beta-GR. The reaction product was visible in the vesicular structures, situated above the plasmolemma, although some of them contained no reaction product. Thus the presence of two types of secretory structure can be inferred: the mucocysts, with ATP-ase in their membranes, and other extrusomes containing active Beta-GR.

The results of crosses carried out between the strains originating from regions of Europe distant from each other, i.e. from Spain and Hungary as well as between them and the standard strain of P. pentaurelia from Pennsylvania, USA are presented. It seems that the studied strains are not genetically differentiated within P. pentaurelia and that the species is characterized by moderate inbreeding.

13 habitats (17 sampling places) in the Slovak Tatra National Park were investigated with regard to the Paramecium aurelia species complex and other zooplankton. No species of the aurelia complex were found, only paramecium bursaria and P. caudatum were recorded at some sampling places. In the studied water bodies acidification of water was noted. This caused impoverishment of their zooplankton composition including ciliates.
