This study was aimed at determining the effects of implementing a medium-term (six-month) exercise and/or a diet program on the kinanthropometric and metabolic parameters of obese children. The participants were 42 subjects (27 boys, 15 girls), whose ages were between 8 and 11, divided into three groups according to the program they followed. The E group followed a physical exercise program (three 90-minute sessions per week), the D group a low calorie diet, and the E+D group both interventions. A repeated-measure ANOVA was used to compare measurements of the participants' kinanthropometric and metabolic parameters at different times of the program, with the means being compared using the Tukey post-hoc test. It was found that medium-term intervention based on the combination of exercise and low calorie diet improved the obese children's kinanthropometric and metabolic parameters, especially those related to the lipid profile. Also, this combined program was more effective in controlling weight than the exercise or low calorie diet interventions alone.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between weight status and recreational drug use in Korean adolescents. A total of 72,399 adolescent students (38,152 boys and 34,247 girls) from the middle first to high third grade participated in the 5th Korea Youth Risk Behaviour Web-based Survey (KYRBWS-V) project in 2009. They were assessed for body mass index (BMI) and recreational drug abuse. The associations between BMI and recreational drug use were examined using multivariable logistic regression analysis after adjusting for the covariate variables of age, smoking frequency and cigarette consumption, frequency of alcohol consumption and severe alcohol intoxication, amount of alcohol consumed, parents’ education level, economic status, sedentary activities during the week, mental stress, sleep duration, frequency of vigorous and moderate physical activities, and muscular strength exercises during the week. For boys, the odds ratio (OR) (95% confidence interval [CI]) between overweight and drug use were 0.990 (0.723–1.356; p = 0.950) for almost none, 0.939 (0.521–1.693; p = 0.834) for past use, and 0.791 (0.385–1.624; p = 0.523) for present use. The OR (95% CI) between obesity and drug use was 0.731(0.508–1.052; p = 0.091) for almost none, 0.755 (0.389–1.465; p = 0.407) for past use, and 0.701 (0.314–1.565; p = 0.386) for present use. For girls, the OR (95% CI) between overweight and drug use was 1.112 (0.702–1.763; p = 0.650) for almost none, 1.103 (0.464–2.619; p = 0.825) for past use, and 0.927 (0.267–3.218; p = 0.905) for present use. The OR (95% CI) between obesity and drug abuse was 0.594 (0.261–1.352; p = 0.215) for almost none, 1.318 (0.462–3.764; p = 606) for past use, and <0.001(<0.001–<0.001; p = 0.998) for present use. We concluded that recreational drug use had no correlation with overweight and obesity in Korean adolescents.

Spontaneous pneumothorax is most common in adolescents and young adults. Some of them develop contralateral pneumothorax. In this paper, we report the case of a patient with spontaneous contralateral pneumothorax, whose body mass index (BMI) was 18.8 kg/m2. For either chest physicians or thoracic surgeons, follow up with recognition of increased risk of the contralateral pneumothorax is important especially in patients with contralateral bullous lesions and low BMI.

The cause of hypertension in young adults (age:18–29 years) is mostly a primary condition although secondary causes are frequent in this population. Clinical files of 100 patients were reviewed to evaluate the use of diagnostic tests after completion of diagnostic work-up for hypertension. Seventy-nine patients had primary hypertension while 21 patients had secondary hypertension. Renal imaging studies, serum levels of aldosterone and plasma renin activity, and screening tests for pheochromocytoma were more likely to be performed in patients younger than 24 years, in female patients and in patients without familial history of hypertension in primary hypertensive patients (p<0.05). Renal imaging studies and screening tests for pheochromocytoma were done more frequently in patients with Stage 2 hypertension (p<0,05). Among secondary hypertensives, renal imaging studies and renal biopsy were more ordered in patients younger than 24 years, in female patients, in patients with Stage 2 hypertension and in patients without family history for hypertension (p<0.05). Mean body mass index was higher in patients with primary hypertension than patients with secondary hypertension (p<0.05). Seventy patients (70%) had undergone several screening interventions with negative results. In conclusion, a simple, stepwise diagnostic evaluation would greatly benefit the management of young hypertensives.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the correlations of anthropometric and body composition variables with the performance (i.e., snatch; clean & jerk; front squat; back squat) of Iranian elite weightlifters. Forty-two subjects (mean ± SD of age 16.21 ± 3.22 years) volunteered to participate in the study.All subjects competed at the Iranian National Championship. Anthropometric and body composition variables, including height, sitting height, cormic index, lean body mass (LBM), body mass index (BMI), modified BMI (by the cormic index), %fat, shoulder circumference, chest circumference, WHR (wrist to hip ratio), as well as performance of weightlifters (i.e., snatch; clean & jerk; front squat; back squat) were measured.Results showed that the snatch and clean & jerk records significantly correlated with height, sitting height, weight, shoulder and chest circumference, LBM, BMI; whereas we showed negative correlations between the snatch and clean & jerk records with the %fat as well as WHR values. Results also showed that the snatch and clean & jerk records significantly correlated with body mass index (BMI) (r= 0.357, and r= 0.374; p<0.05); however there was no relationship between snatch and clean & jerk records and the modified body mass index (MBMI).According to the results, it was concluded that there was strong correlations existing between weightlifter performance and the anthropometric and body composition variables. Also, it is recommended that the cormic index (CI) is a corrective factor for BMI values.

Background: The Corona pandemic imposed on the countries of the world to take many strict measures to limit the spread of this virus, as home quarantine. Objective: this study aimed to identify the psychological aspects level among the fitness center goers during home quarantine and the differences in these aspects level according to the gender variable. As well as, the relationship between the psychological stress and motivation level, in addition, to the relationship between some psychological aspects and the body mass index, finally the differences in the body mass index before and after home quarantine. Design: To achieve this, the researchers used the descriptive approach on a sample consisting of (510), selected using randomly sample technique with the average age of (24±2.6) years. Because of the home quarantine and to reduce face-to-face interaction, the researchers used a questionnaire by using the Google form. The study tool consisted of (11) paragraphs associated with stress and (11) paragraphs associated with motivation. The researchers used means, standard deviations, paired and independent sample T-test by using SPSS version 24 with a confidence level of 95% (p value < 0.05). Results: The results of the study have shown that the psychological stress level among the study sample came with a high average (4.03) and moderate average (2.83) for motivation domain without any statistically significant differences according to the gender variable. As well as, a statistically significant association between the level of psychological stress and motivational in males and females with a higher percentage of body mass index (BMI) for males and females after home quarantine and a higher percentage of females. While the results of the study showed a statistically significant correlation between psychological aspects and body mass index. Conclusion: In light of these results, the urgent need to activate the role and importance of psychological self-care for individuals during home quarantine and work to find a balance between leisure time and other life activities.

Purpose: To analyze the feasibility and outcomes of robotic rectal cancer surgery in obese patients. Methods: From 2005 to 2012, 101 consecutive rectal cancers operated robotically were enrolled in a prospective database. Patients were stratified into obese (BMI ≥ 30 kg/m2) and non-obese (BMI < 30 kg/m2) groups. Operative, perioperative parameters, and pathologic outcomes were compared. Data were analyzed using SPSS 22.0, while statistical significance was defined as a p value ≤ .05. Results: There were 33 obese patients (mean BMI 33.8 kg/m2). Patients were comparable regarding gender, T stage, and type of operation. Operative time and blood loss were higher in the obese group; only operative time was statistically significant. The conversion rate, length of stay, and anastomotic leak rates were similar. Circumferential margin positivity and lymph node yield were comparable. Disease free and overall survivals at 3 years were 75.8% versus 80.9% and 84.8% versus 92.6%, respectively for obese and non-obese subgroups. Conclusions: Robotic surgery for curative treatment of rectal cancer in the obese is safe and feasible. BMI does not influence conversion rates, length of stay, postoperative complications, and quality of the specimen or survival when the robotic platform is used.

The aim of this study was to assess the associations of the body mass index (BMI), waist circumference (WC), and waist-to-height ratio (WHtR) with ischemic heart disease (IHD) and risk factors of IHD in the Lithuanian population aged 25 to 70 years. The cross-sectional health survey was carried out in Kaunas, which is the second largest city in Lithuania, and in five regions randomly selected from the northern, southern, eastern, western and central parts of Lithuania. Data from 2048 subjects (936 men and 1112 women) were analyzed. In both sexes, the odds ratios for reduced high density lipoprotein cholesterol, elevated triglycerides, high fasting blood glucose, and hypertension rose with an increasing quartile of BMI, WC, and WHtR. The likelihood of having IHD was statistically significantly higher in the fourth quartile of these anthropometric measures when compared to the first one. Comparison of the logistic regression models revealed that the models with WHtR best fit the prediction of IHD risk. Compared with BMI and WC, WHtR showed a stronger association with IHD and its risk factors in the Lithuanian adult population.

Breast cancer related upper extremity lymphedema (BCRL) reduces the quality of life of those who have had surgery for breast cancer. The aim of this study is to evaluate the risk factors for BCRL and determine whether immediate autologous tissue breast reconstruction is one of them. A case control study was conducted comparing patients with BCRL (n=97) to surgically treated breast cancer patients without BCRL (control, n=126). The groups were matched for age, type of breast surgery and radiation therapy. Postoperative upper extremity infection, body mass index (BMI), occupation (level of hand-use), and immediate autologous tissue breast reconstruction were investigated as a risk factor of BCRL. Mastectomy was performed on 47.6 % (n=60) and 37.2% (n=36) of patients in the control and the BCRL groups, respectively. Eight patients (13.3%) had immediate autologous tissue breast reconstruction in the control mastectomy group. Six of 36 BCRL patients (16.7%) underwent mastectomy with immediate autologous tissue breast reconstruction. There was no significant difference between groups with respect to incidence or method of immediate reconstruction (p=0.65). Patient occupation (level of hand use) was found to be positively correlated to development of BCRL (p=0.0001). Upper extremity infection rate was 22.7% in the BCRL group and 4.0% in the controls (p=0.0001). The mean BMI in the control and BCRL groups 26.8 kg/m2 and 29.1kg/m2, respectively (p=0.003). In conclusion, in this study characteristics positively associated with development of BCRL included occupation, infection, and increased BMI. Immediate reconstruction of the breast was not found as a risk factor for BCRL. However larger studies are needed, to further evaluate the effect of breast reconstruction on BCRL.
