The aim of this work was to develop a comprehensive prioritization method to select the biomarkers to be monitored in the French national biomonitoring program. The first step consisted in building an exhaustive list of biomarkers. The next step involved prioritizing the initial list of biomarkers according to specific scientific questions about human exposure to chemicals in the environment, and meet logistical, feasibility and budgetary constraints. The Delphi consensus method was used to prioritize biomarkers and was developed in three phases: i) the definition of relevant criteria for selecting biomarkers; ii) the prioritization of the biomarker list based on these criteria and iii) the validation of the list by the stakeholders. Among the eight relevant criteria for selecting biomarkers, hazard identification and social perception were the highest-rated and lowestrated criteria, respectively. After scoring each criterion for each group of biomarkers, and discussing the relative ranking of each group during a round table meeting, the final prioritized list obtained contained both historic (e.g. dioxins or lead) and emerging substances (e.g. phthalates, bisphenol A). Combining rigor and flexibility, our method has clearly helped to build a prioritized list shared and supported by many international actors.

Chemical analysis of various biological matrices is routinely used for assessment of human exposure to various toxic metals. In this work, 489 samples of urinary calculi originating from almost the whole of The Czech Republic, were collected and subjected to mineralogical and elemental analysis. This study was aimed at mercury, the content of which was determined using thermo-oxidation - cold vapor - atomic absorption spectrometry. The effects of mineralogical composition, sex, age and region were recorded in order to verify the applicability of urinary calculi for biomonitoring. Relationships with other minor and trace elements were also investigated. Association of mercury with whewellite mineral was observed as well as a remarkable relationship with selenium, confirming the role of selenium in mercury excretion. No statistically significant effect was observed on the mercury content in stones with regard to the sex or region. Median values in age groups follow a trend with the maximum median value 0.365 mg kg−1 in the group of 41–50 year old donors, decreasing to 0.060 mg kg−1 for the oldest group (81–92 years). In this study, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) and polychlorinated biphenyl (PCB) contaminations in the leaf, stem and root tissues of common mallow (Malva sylvestris L.) were investigated by using gas chromatography to give an insight into the bioaccumulation of these persistent pollutants. The sampling stations are located in the Dilovası and İzmit Districts of Kocaeli Province in Turkey. Total PAH concentrations varied between 10.44 and 61.15 pg g-1 dw (dry weight). The most dominant PAH congeners were Acenaphthene and Acenaphthylene which are low molecular weight. Total PCB concentrations were found to be between 326.79 and 4496.42 pg g-1 dw. PCB 66, PCB 110, PCB 153 and PCB 180 were found to be the most dominant congeners. Detected concentrations in root tissues showed the plant’s ability in accumulating these pollutants. Therefore, these findings suggest that Malva sylvestris can reflect the contamination levels which might be used to monitor soil and ecological pollution levels caused by these persistent pollutants.
