The hydrodynamic and mass transfer parameters in water, in several types of tower-loop air-lift bioreactor were investigated. The following configurations of the apparatus were used for experiments: with , internal-loop with static mixers in the draft tube, with various circulation tube diameters (0 more thet Ad/Ar more thet 1), external-loop with perforated plates in the main zone (multistage reactor). The highest kla coefficients were-loop with perforated plates in the main zone (multistage reactor). The highest kla coefficients were obtained in external-loop multistage reactor. Ad/Ar ratio had significant influence on the main process parameters: , , transfer coefficient and mixing time.

for plant cell culture was improved. Diameter of the upper part of the bioreactor, was expanded from 155 to 220 mm. Function of a draughtube was changed from a suspension riser to a downcomer. Instead of original aeration tube with holes stainless steel sintered air sparger was introduced. As a result the aeration rate was reduced sixfold for the same kLa value, and the culture foaming and cell deposit on the bioreactor wall was markedly limited.

Changes of the main hydrodynamical and parameters during. in a pilot plant external-loop were investigated. the final average concentrations of biomass and citric acid obtained in experimental fermentations were 10.5g/l and 96.6 g/l, respectively. Significant influence of the increasing biomass concentration on the apparent viscosity of the broth, gas holdup, liquid velocity and volumetric oxygen transfer coeficient was found.
