The effect of annealing SrLaAlO_{4} (SLA) and SrLaGaO_{4} (SLG) crystals in oxidizing and reducing atmospheres in the temperature range of 950°C-1300°C was investigated. Three kinds of anisotropic defects D_{1}, D_{2}, and E at the temperature range of 4-300 K were found. By diagonalization of orthorhombic spin-Hamiltonian parameters: |D|=0.0541(10) cm^{-1}, |E|=0.0108(10) cm^{-1}, g_{∥}=0.883(5), and g_{⊥ }=1.922(5) for D_{1} defects for SLG and SLA were calculated and they had the same values within the margin of error.

Single crystals of SrLaGaO_{4} and SrLaGa_{3}O_{7} singly doped with Nd and codoped with Nd and Yb have been grown by the Czochralski method. Both the compounds form tetragonal crystals but belong to different space groups. A common feature of these matrices is a structural disorder resulting from statistical distribution of Sr^{2+} and La^{3+} ions over the lattice sites. A previous investigation of a laser diode pumped SrLaGa_{3}O_{7}:Nd laser revealed that inhomogeneous broadening of spectral lines of Nd^{3+} was advantageous for optical pumping and did not influence adversely the extraction efficiency. The present paper deals mainly with optical properties of Yb^{3+} ions which are of interest for the design of lasers pumped by a diode laser and operating near 1 μm.

In this paper we report the elastooptic constants p_{ij} of strontium lanthanum aluminate, SrLaAlO_{4} and strontium lanthanum gallate SrLaGaO_{4} single crystals, which were determined at room temperature using Brillouin scattering method. In order to investigate the elastooptic constants of SrLaAlO_{4} and SrLaGaO_{4} single crystals, a substitution method proposed by Cummins and Schoen, and developed by Nelson and Lax was used. The obtained results are also discussed in terms of the nature defects which might arise in these crystals during growth process.

Absorption spectra of SrLaAlO_{4} and SrLaGaO_{4} single crystals are investigated as well as their changes after irradiation by γ-quanta (^{60}Co source). Both crystals reveal a similar behaviour that is caused, as it seems, by the same nature of colour centres in them. The conclusion that oxygen defects as well as Fe impurities play a significant role in the colour centres formation in these crystals.

SrLaGaO_{4} and SrLaAlO_{4} substrates grown by the Czochralski method have no twins or subgrains however they show strong tendency to form point defects. The nature of these defects is not well understood yet. They may be associated with deviations from stoichiometry andor oxygen atoms located in the interstitial positions. Virtually all title crystals grown by the Czochralski method display various colours from light green to deeply red owing to light absorption by point defects. Absorption centres appear to be very stable in time and resistant to usual thermal treatment. UV excitation increases the density of defects and gives rise to strong photoluminescence, otherwise too weak to be observed.

The crystallochemical characteristics of polycrystalline samples, Sr_{1-x}La_{x}AlO_{4}, Sr_{1-x}Νd_{x}ΑlO_{4} (x = 0.02+0.20) and Sr_{1-x}Bi_{x}NdΑlO_{4} (x = 0.05 ÷ 0.50) prepared by the oxalate coprecipitation and cryochemical technique have been investigated. The existence limits of single-phase states for pairs of elements Sr-Pb (x < 0.05) and Nd-Bi (x < 0.2) were determined. The microprobe X-ray analysis showed the Bi uniform distribution. The dielectric properties of pure SrLaΑlO_{4}, SrLaGaO_{4} and partial replacement La → Nd samples were measured. It can be concluded that these compounds are suitable as substrate materials of HTSC thin films.
