It is concluded that it is necessary to monitor the influent toxicity on-line in order to optimise and control such processes. A cheap and rugged on-line toxicity monitor can be realised in the form of an fiber optoc toxicity sensor based on fluorogenic compounds.
The paper shows advantages of fluorogenic substrate in toxicity studies:(1) - the evaluation of the pure metal effect; (2) - the determination of antagonistic effects; (3) - the mechanism of inhibition (Hg, Pb and Cd were characterized by competitive, noncompetitive and ancompetitive, approprately).
