Traditional system of social ties and communities, based to a major extent on the classic dichotomy of Gemeinschaft/Gesellschaft succumbs to the process of debilitation, even atrophy. Modern social networks are undergoing a metamorphosis towards the system of “weak ties”, the term coined by Mark Granovetter. Those ties, despite their name, are very effective. Changes in the social sphere are dynamically connected with the process of redevelopment of urban spaces. The spaces evolve towards creation of residential complexes that enable an unlimited choice of living scenarios and lifestyles (Homo eligens [choosing agent] architecture). The trend towards pluralism is connected with the tendencies to create multicultural spaces, that evolve in the direction of becoming transnational.

Introduction: Development of surgery methods, generally known success of the treatment which is hip arthroplasty as well as increasing number of younger and younger patients caused bigger and bigger expectations against the treatment. People, who decide to have a hip prostheses, want not only the improvement in joint function and pain relief but also possibility to take part in different physical activities. The aim of this study was evaluation of patients expectations connected with physical activity after hip arthroplasty and their level of knowledge towards physical activity after surgery. Material and methods: The participants were 32 patients, who were subjected primary hip arthroplasty at the Department of Traumatology and Orthopaedics of the Ministry of Defence’s Military Institute of the Health Services, Central Clinical Hospital in 2010. The average age of these patients was 62,9 (range 40-81). Interrogative tool was the questionnaire. PASW Statistic 18 Program was used to work up investigation results. Results: The results of this study indicate that patients expectations connected with physical activity after total hip arthroplasty are minor. Conclusion: That is probably because the patients level of physical activity before a surgery is very low and their knowledge about possibilities in physical activity with hip prostheses can be limited.
