One of the problems of the elderly is to reduce the efficiency of regulation of the balance of the body, often resulting in deterioration of their stability and falls. Whole physical activity is one of the elements which in a measurable way are affecting the ability to function independently in society. Efforts are, therefore, studies aimed at understanding the impact of physical activity on the level of balance control in the elderly and attempts to develop the best strategy for prevention and promotion physical activity The aim of this study was to determine the efficiency of the regulation of body balance and stability in the elderly in terms of their daily physical activity Material and methods: The study included 66 people aged over 65 years of age. Based on questionnaire it was identified the level of health and current level of physical activity. Basic stabilometric parameters were evaluated using AccuGait platform while maintaining a standing upright posture with and without visual control and while the platform was set horizontally and tiltable in four basic directions. Also performed attempts to tilt the body to the limit of stability in four basic directions. The results: Based on analysis of the path length, speed and size swingings fields, it was found that in people who are less active physically disabling visual control did not start a sufficient mechanisms of the body balance control, especially when the base of support is not positioned horizontally. These patients also showed a significant the lack of skills of narrowing the margin of safety when the body was leaned to the back Conclusions:Seniors with lower levels of physical activity are generally characterized by lower sensitivity of proprioception. Older people who are less physically active showed deterioration of stability of the body especially in the direction to the back. Physical activity associated only with functioning independently in the home environment may not be a sufficient stimulus of maintenance the efficiency of elderly.
INTRODUCTION: Distraction osteogenesis for the correction of axial deformities and short lower limbs is a long-term process which adversely affects the functional state of the locomotor system and the child's emotions. Therefore, the aim of the study was to analyse the spatiotemporal parameters of gait, and to compare the results of treatment in children after lengthening the tibia or femur by the Ilizarov technique. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The study was performed in 40 children with lower limb asymmetry treated in the Department of Clinical Orthopaedics in Sosnowiec in 2000–2006. Each child was subjected to osteodistraction treatment using the Ilizarov technique. The subjects were divided into two subgroups: group 1 consisted of 20 children who had Ilizarov tibial lengthening, and group 2 consisted of 20 children who had Ilizarov femoral lengthening. Gait analysis was carried out using a dedicated system from Zebris, in which the patient is expected to walk along an approx. 2-metre long marked trajectory. The treadmill platform responded to the load, which enabled evaluation of the ground reaction force and the spatiotemporal parameters of gait. After completing measurements, the system produced a report with values of the tested parameters. RESULTS: The study shows that both in children with a lengthened femur or tibia, three of the five subphases of the stance phase in the operated on limb and unoperated on limb were longer, and two shorter as compared to the normal values reported by J. Perry. The subphases of initial contact, loading response and midstance were longer, while the terminal stance and preswing were shorter. CONCLUSIONS: In children with a short lower limb treated with the Ilizarov technique, a better outcome was achieved after lengthening the femur compared to the tibia. The gait cycle in children after limb elongation is different from normal.

MATERIAŁ I METODY: Badania wykonano u 40 dzieci z asymetrią kończyn dolnych leczonych w Katedrze i Oddziale Klinicznym Ortopedii w Sosnowcu w latach 2000–2006.
BACKGROUND: The occurrence of back pain is associated with many factors, which include among others, workloads such as: the type and time of work execution as well as repetitive work. The work of a paramedic must also take into account the impact of stress on the increased tension of soft tissues. Overload often occurs due to the shearing forces of forced static positions, as well as dynamic loads during the handling of sick and injured people. AIM: The aim of the study was to evaluate the effect of the work and work-time of paramedics on the occurrence of back pain. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The study included 89 men aged 20 to 45 years (mean age = 29.30 ± 4.56) actively enga-ged in the paramedic occupation. The respondents were divided into two groups – men working in the profession for five years, and over. The study authors used a questionnaire and the Visual Analogue Scale. RESULTS: Among the males from group A, the intensity of back pain showed a positive correlation with the number of years working in the profession. No co-variability between the intensity of back pain and their age was observed among the examined paramedics. Back pain affects their daily duties, the efficiency of their work and the mood of the respondents. CONCLUSIONS: The occurrence and severity of back pain among paramedics increases in the first few years of their careers. Back pain in paramedics affects the activities they perform in everyday life.

WSTĘP: Występowanie dolegliwości bólowych kręgosłupa u ratowników medycznych jest związane m.in. z obciążeniem pracą zawodową, jej rodzajem, czasem trwania i monotypią ruchową.
OBJECTIVES: The aim of the work was to assess the level of physical activity of women before and during pregnancy and to determine whether physical exercise influences the course and duration of labor and the postpartum period. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The study encompassed 63 pregnant women aged 19–36, with a mean pregnancy weight gain of 7–27 kg, no contraindication to physical activity, and term birth. Physical activity was assessed at three stages: before and during pregnancy, and during the postpartum period, with the use of the seven-day international IPAQ questionnaire. The respondents’ physical condition in the postpartum period was assessed with an original 26-item questionnaire. RESULTS: The self-assessed level of physical activity before pregnancy was moderate in most respondents (60.3%); only 12.7% of the respondents declared a low level of physical activity. During pregnancy the level of physical activity decreased in 25.4% of the respondents and significantly reduced in 11%. Women who were inactive before pregnancy remained inactive during pregnancy. The mean duration of the second stage of labor in women with moderate and high levels of physical activity was 43.61 min. The length of the entire postpartum period was the shortest (four weeks) in active women. CONCLUSIONS: Physical activity before and during pregnancy has an impact on the duration of labor and the postpartum period.
