Wstęp: Badania dotyczące niezawodności i trafności baterii testów sprawności fizycznej wśród pacjentów cierpiących z powodu przewlekłego bólu dolnego odcinka kręgosłupa (Chronic Low Back Pain, CLBP) nie są liczne, natomiast badania takie obejmujące Nigeryjczyków praktycznie nie istnieją. Rzetelność powtarzalności testu, trafność zbieżna konstruktu i trafność w aspekcie różnic międzygrupowych dla baterii zadań Simmondsa oceniających sprawność fizyczną (Simmonds Physical Performance Task Battery, SPPTB) były badane na grupie Nigeryjczyków z przewlekłym bólem dolnego odcinka kręgosłupa (CLBP). Materiał i metody: Niniejsze korelacyjne badanie przekrojowe przeprowadzone zostało wśród 40 kolejno zrekrutowanych pacjentów z przewlekłymi bólami dolnego odcinka kręgosłupa i 40 zdrowych, dopasowanych do grupy pacjentów pod względem wieku i płci członków grupy kontrolnej.

Introduction: Studies on reliability and validity of physical performance test batteries among patients with Chronic Low Back Pain (CLBP) are generally sparse and specifically non-existent for Nigerians. Test-retest reliability, convergent construct validity and known-group validity of the Simmonds Physical Performance Tasks Battery (SPPTB) were investigated among Nigerians with CLBP. Materials and methods: This cross-sectional correlation study involved 40 consecutively recruited patients with CLBP and 40 apparently healthy age – and sex-matched controls. All participants performed the SPPTB on two different occasions but only CLBP patients completed the Oswestry Low-Back Pain Disability Questionnaire (OLBPDQ). Data were analyzed using inferential statistics at 0.05 alpha level. Results: The Intra-Class Correlation (ICC) coefficients for test-retest of SPPTB were 0.75-0.99 for CLBP patients. Correlations (r) between OLBPDQ scores and scores on each of the performance tests on the SPPTB ranged from 0.39 to 0.42. There were significant differences (p= 0.00) in SPPTB scores between patients with CLBP and apparently healthy controls. Conclusion: Simmonds physical performance task battery is a reliable and valid functional assessment tool but may not sufficiently discriminate between persons with or without low-back pain. Correlations between self-reported physical functional capacity and patients’ performance on the test battery were weak to moderate.
