Background: The analysis of demographic tendencies indicates a continuing process of extending life expectancy in numerous societies. Alongside the decline in fertility, the continuing process of extending life expectancy is the primary cause for the aging of societies. An increasing percentage of the elderly require defining the welfare among older people and its factors. Aim: This article presents various views on successful aging and introduces the authorial Successful Aging Index model, which was the basis for a questionnaire diagnosing the quality of aging. The author’s intention was to create a diagnostic tool for said process. Conclusions: Presented tool according to the author can be very useful for diagnosing the course of successful aging. However, this requires additional empirical testing.

Background: Comprehensive cardiac rehabilitation (CR) is a process designed to restore full physical, psychological and social activity and to reduce cardiovascular risk factors. Fear of movement may contribute to the occurrence and intensification of hypokinesia, and consequently affect the effectiveness of therapy. The aim of the study was to determine the level of barriers of physical activity in patients undergoing cardiac rehabilitation. The relationship between selected determinants (age and health selfassessment) and the kinesiophobia level were also examined. Material/Methods: 115 people aged 40-84 years were examined: 50 females (x = 63.46; SD = 11.19) and 65 males (x = 64.65; SD = 10.59) - patients undergoing cardiac rehabilitation at the Upper-Silesian Medical Centre in Katowice. In the present study, the Polish version of questionnaires: Kinesiophobia Causes Scale (KCS) and Short Form Health Survey (SF-36) were used. Questionnaires were supplemented by authors’ short survey. Results: The patients presented an elevated level of kinesiophobia, both in general as well as in individual components. In women, the kinesiophobia level was higher than in men. The psychological domain was a greater barrier of physical activity than the biological one. Strong, negative correlations of psychological and biological domains of kinesiophobia to physical functioning (SF-36) were noted in women. In the case of men, correlations were weaker, but also statistically significant. Conclusions: 1. Sex differentiates patients in their kinesiophobia level 2. Poor self-assessment of health is associated with a greater intensification of kinesiophobia 3. A high level of kinesiophobia may negatively affect cardiac rehabilitation process

INTRODUCTION According to the salutogenic model of health, the global orientation of life (SOC): coherence of comprehensibility, meaningfulness and manageability allows one to balance the body's needs and resources in confrontation with stressors. A sense of coherence may be a key factor in the prevention of civilization diseases, including cardiac diseases. The aim of the study was to assess the sense of coherence in cardiac patients. The dependence between selected variables: the age and level of anxiety and depression with a sense of coherence and its components was also examined. MATERIALS AND METHODS 115 patients were examined: 50 females (age: x = 63.46 ± 11.19 years) and 65 males (age: x = 64.65 ± 10.59). The Sense of Coherence (SOC-29) and Hospital Anxiety and Depression (HADS) questionnaires were used. The questionnaires were supplemented by the author's own metrics. The statistical analysis included performing descriptive statistics (mean, SD), calculating Spearman's rank correlation and the level of differences (ANOVA). RESULTS The patients presented a reduced level of sense of coherence in general, as well as in all the components. In men, weak, negative correlations between age with a sense of manageability and sense of meaningfulness were noted, as well as a strong, negative correlation between depression and all SOC components. In the case of females, the correlations were weaker, but statistically significant. Cardiosurgery interventions do not determine the sense of coherence, either in the case of females or men. CONCLUSIONS 1. A reduced level of sense of coherence may predispose one to cardiac diseases and contribute to the failure of health treatment. 2. The presence of concomitant diseases is associated with a low sense of coherence, both in females and males

WSTĘP Według salutogenetycznego modelu zdrowia, globalna orientacja życiowa: spójność sensowności zrozumiałości i zaradności pozwala równoważyć wymagania oraz zasoby organizmu w konfrontacji z czynnikami stresogennymi. MATERIAŁ I METODY Zbadano 115 osób w wieku 40–84 lat: 50 kobiet (wiek: x = 63,46 ± 11,19 roku) i 65 mężczyzn (wiek: x = 64,65 ± 10,59 roku).

Materiał i metody: zbadano 185 osób - 98 kobiet (53% ogółu) i 87 mężczyzn (47%). Wyniki: Odnotowano korelacje wieku i momentu zdiagnozowania choroby. Wiek badanych kobiet i mężczyzn ujemnie koreluje z fizycznym i psychicznym komponentem zdrowia, zaś samoocena zdrowia słabo koreluje z aktywnością fizyczną.

Introduction: Diabetes mellitus type 2 is a metabolic disorder that is characterized by insulin resistance in combination with impairedinsulin secretion from the beta cells of the pancreas. Pharmacological treatment largely consists of supplementing theinsulin level, the use of medication which improves the sensitivity of cells to insulin and that affects their production. Of essentialimportance is the modification of lifestyle, especially adaptation to a diabetic diet and weight reduction. One of the most important risk factors of diabetes is the low level of physical activity of potential patients. Aim of the study: To determine the relationship of selected elements of lifestyle, in particular, physical activity on the selfassessment of health in patients with type 2 diabetes.Material and methods: 185 people - 98 females (53% of the total) and 87 males (47%) were examined: these being patients with diagnosed type 2 diabetes of a diabetic clinic from several Silesian cities. In this study, psychometric techniques supplemented by basic anthropometry with the measurement of body height, body weight and the circumferences of the waist and hips were used. The survey consisted of metrics and standardized questionnaires: physical activity - HPA, quality of life related with health - SF-36. For statistical analyses used were: descriptive statistics - mean and standard deviation, differences level calculated by analyses of variance (ANOVA). Dependencies using the Pearson correlation coefficient. The adopted level of statistical significance was: p≤0.05.Results: The correlation between the time of diabetes diagnosis and age were statistically significant. There were no gender, use of diet, BMI and WHR statistical significant differences between the patients who adhered to the dietary recommendations in practice, and those patients who neglected this type of therapy. Differences between physical activity with regard to gender, BMI and WHR index were no found. Both in females and males, age negatively correlated with physical and mental components of health, while self-assessment of health indifferently correlates with physical activity. Conclusions: Physical activity in patients with type 2 diabetes was at a low-level. Declared physical activity and diet had no impact on the BMI and WHR index. Physical activity positively correlated with the self-assessment of health.

Background: Research of health determinants confirmed its beneficial relationships with the optimum level of physical activity at any age. The problem is the physical passivity of societies. In the elderly, this problem is of particular importance, which is conditioned by both biological factors and social. This justifies the diagnosis of relationships: the barrier activity - activity - well-being. Material/Methods: 393peoplewere tested:216women and 177men aged65 -85 years. A questionnaire with closed questions was used as a tool in the research. Physical activity was examined using selected questions of Baecke questionnaire, barriers to physical activity using a scale KCS, and self-assessment of health - by using the SF-36. Results: Correlation analysis of age and the activity showed a low relationship for the women and no relationship for the men. There were no differences in activity due to sex, either due to the occurrence of chronic diseases. There is a weak correlation between age and kinesiophobia among women, no relationship was found in the group of men. Prevalence of chronic diseases differentiated the level of kinesiophobia only in women. Analysis of health self-assessment showed a relatively well-being in the test - the average PC and MC were above 50 points. Conclusions: Women represent a lower level of physical activity than men, but at an older age, these differences are no longer statistically significant. However, the level of activity barriers is still higher. Aging is a process which varies greatly individually, and this applies to activity, its barriers, and self-assessment of health. Age is not a category that fully explains the complex issues depending on the variables examined.

Technical development of human civilisation brings about a decrease of adaptation potential of an individual, which is directly linked to deficient motor activity. Only precise identification of factors leading to hypokinesia would make prophylactic and therapeutic actions possible. In this article, authors would like to introduce a new, original tool aiming at diagnosing limitations of motor activity in adults. They propose a synthetic diagnosis of hypokinesia in two domains: biological and psycho-social, which is based on the contemporary model of health.

Background: As a result of numerous advantages of Nordic Walking such as the movement simplicity, its affordability and availability for people of various ages and with different levels of fitness, this relatively young physical activity has been developing remarkably for several years. It has the potential of increasing physical activity among elderly people. Defining to what extent practicing Nordic Walking (NW) influences the general level of physical activity and the quality of life of elderly people. Material/Methods: 161 people were examined (93 women and 68 men) at the age of 60 or above. In this group 48 practised NW: 33 women and 15 men. Health self-assessment was determined using the SF-36 questionnaire, whereas the level of physical activity using the SEWL questionnaire. Results: Statistically significant differences were noted (p <0.05) between respondents practising NW and the control group at the level of both physical activity and health selfassessment. Conclusions: Practising NW positively influences the increase of elderly people’s physical activity, translating to the level of health self-assessment.

One of the most important factors of successful ageing is a sufficient level of motor independence, which is strongly associated with an appropriate level of activity. It was decided to determine the relationship between barriers to physical activity and physical activity and health self-assessment in healthy and chronically ill men, among 206 men aged 65–83 years. A relationship was found between kinesiophobia, physical activity and self-assessment of health, and the differences between health self-assessment in the healthy and chronically ill. No differences were found regarding activity. Important factors affecting the health of older men are selfawareness of being chronically sick, BMI and level of physical activity. A relationship exists between kinesiophobia, physical activity and self-assessment of health. The awareness of being chronically sick, BMI and level of physical activity are the most significant factors affecting the health self-assessment of older men.

Supplementation is one of the forms of powerlifting training support. It may have an influence on physical parameters of the contenders and may also have an impact on perception of the body and self – esteem. The aim of the study was to assess relationships between age, BMI, data concerning training, supplementation, self – assurance and body value among the contenders practising powerlifting.51 people who regularly practise powerlifting: 11 women aged 23.5 ±3.6 and 40 men aged 23.9 ±8.5 have been examined using self – esteem (SES) and body – esteem (BES) questionnaires. Data concerning age, BMI, training variables and supplementation have been also gathered.Supplementation is used by 91% of women and 85% of men. Men use more types of supplements than women (p < 0.05). Among women SES does not correlate with any other variables. Among men SES negatively correlates with the number of used supplements, as well as with all of the BES domains.Using supplementation among people who train powerlifting is rather common. Among women, SES in not related in any way with training or supplementation. Among men, lower self – esteem (SES) is significantly counterbalanced with BES.

BACKGROUND: The occurrence of back pain is associated with many factors, which include among others, workloads such as: the type and time of work execution as well as repetitive work. The work of a paramedic must also take into account the impact of stress on the increased tension of soft tissues. Overload often occurs due to the shearing forces of forced static positions, as well as dynamic loads during the handling of sick and injured people. AIM: The aim of the study was to evaluate the effect of the work and work-time of paramedics on the occurrence of back pain. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The study included 89 men aged 20 to 45 years (mean age = 29.30 ± 4.56) actively enga-ged in the paramedic occupation. The respondents were divided into two groups – men working in the profession for five years, and over. The study authors used a questionnaire and the Visual Analogue Scale. RESULTS: Among the males from group A, the intensity of back pain showed a positive correlation with the number of years working in the profession. No co-variability between the intensity of back pain and their age was observed among the examined paramedics. Back pain affects their daily duties, the efficiency of their work and the mood of the respondents. CONCLUSIONS: The occurrence and severity of back pain among paramedics increases in the first few years of their careers. Back pain in paramedics affects the activities they perform in everyday life.

WSTĘP: Występowanie dolegliwości bólowych kręgosłupa u ratowników medycznych jest związane m.in. z obciążeniem pracą zawodową, jej rodzajem, czasem trwania i monotypią ruchową.
